After reading a number of car mags on my summer holidays it appears that the new Clio RS has had a spectacular fall from grace, various reasons were given including the standard auto box and the styling that doesn't make it stand out from a normal Clio. The new Fiesta ST appears to be the hot hatch to have now.

Fords offering of the Fiesta and Focus ST should be on the short list plus there's always the Mini Cooper S and Fiat 500 Abarth as contendors. Fiesta ST is getting rave reviews and is competitively priced :D

The new Clio RS is chasing a different market to the 182, 197 and 200 and by all accounts is selling really well in 'other' markets. The UK is slightly different but I'd want to drive the thing before making any decision.

They do need a bit of space, which rules out the Abarth, and he dislikes the large fiesta grill.

Focus would be a good option ....

Obviously I'm going to suggest a mIni... :P

With the F56 coming out soon, deals are to be had - A delivery mileage / '13' Plate Cooper S with full Media / Nav pack and heated leather would be in budget with a bit of shopping around.

(If you don't need the shove, the Cooper SD is dirt cheap to fuel & tax, albeit more of a warm hatch).

Cabin's a lovely place to be, and a cut above the Renault / Ford - Lots of prestige car features, if you pick a well spec'd one.

Warrantied till 2016, and servicing included till 2018.

Boot's tiny, though - Maybe the Clubman if they need the extra space?

Failing that, the Focus ST looks good value - And a Megane 250 on a '12' plate would be within reach.

:)
