Hi,

I've been offered a new job in Canary Wharf and wondered if anyone has worked down there and could recommend an area to look for accomodation? - I've never worked down there so fairly unfamiliar with the area and just looking to rent a room as I'll commute from Edinburgh weekly. Basically looking for a decent place to live, preferably within walking distance.

Any thoughts or opinions you might have will be gratefully received.

Canary wharf does have alot flats, the rent though is expensive, alot of folks go for flat share. you could live a short mile away and get the trains in .....

I will be doing the same shortly if things go my way

I lived in Neutron Tower in the Electron Development from 2009 to 2011, which is within a 15 minute walk to the Wharf - Nice modern flat, overlooking the O2, and with a concierge / gym facility etc...

East India DLR stop is right next to the front door - Handy for City Airport (10-15 mins), and takes you into Bank for the Central Line / back to Canning Town for the Jubilee Line.

Although our rent (sharing with another 2 people) was £1560 pcm / £520 each fully furnished, and included bills (excluding broadband) - So better deals can be had!

My sister works for Barclays in Canary Wharf and lives during the week in Limehouse area. So that may be worth a look?

The main thing to remember with any flat or house is how far away is it from the nearest tube station and on a night bus route. Lots to see and do and cheap to get about. My travelcard for a month zones 1-2 comes in at £112 for unlimited 24hr travel. Forget a car as its gridlocked most of the day. The centres nice (zones 1-2) and then it's surrounded by a not so nice bit. Outside the built up areas its a nice place to live further out but with a commute in. (Kingston etc).

Only issue is that E14 is almost in Essex rather than London - I tended to head out in North West London to socialise, and it was 50 minutes on the tube to get there...(!)

Also, while nice and modern, it was like a concrete jungle, and you literally felt like you could be living anywhere...Not much of a 'London' feel to it.

We eventually moved up to NW6 / Queens Park which was much better (15 mins from Oxford Circus / tube stop at the end of the street) - £1k a month rent / £333 each... Surprisingly affordable indeed...
