Winter tyres
Anybody have a route to get cheap winter tyres? With literally everyone saying that this winter is likely to be awful, should I look to get a set for my S1 at some point, should I not, is it worth it, is it not worth it?
(this having no car just now lark is doing my nut! It's not even like I can afford anything just now!?)

Knockhill sell part worns I think, although if you're keeping the car for a couple of years it'd get new ones. Either online from mytyres or try Aberdeen Tyres in Torry

My son who lives in Aberdeen and drives a Civic Type R GT 2 or 3 years ago bought a set of tyres and alloys complete from Turrif Tyres in strangely enough Turrif.
He is normally on 19's and rubber bands but went down to 17's on advice. The alloys were nice enough 5 spokes and correct PCD/offsets etc. A lotof high performance car owners in the NE use them. Total he thinks was £550 and they I believe will also store between seasons although he didn't use them and instead fills my garage.
They are looking less than 50% worn and his is a daily user in all weathers as he works in construction and he keeps them on from November to March/April usually. Alloys are still looking good even if cheap. He says the car ride is not only different but the ability to move anywhere is transformed. This spring he went back on summers too early as was down in Dunblane anyway and regretted it immediately as was struggling to move when next cold snap.

Well worth changing to winters, you won't believe how much the car is transformed in snow and even just cold temperatures and if you are keeping the car for a few years they also make economic sense because the summer tyres last twice as long too

Just fitted 18" winter tyres onto number one daughters Mini
Couldn't get them in the UK
Went to Mytyres and sourced them for £85 per corner
Delivered from Germany in 5 days
15" wheels and winter tyres in classified

I keep forgetting that I'm on SE and the Avatar doesn't list car and any mods. Just for clarification I posted above about Turrif Tyres just as it was local to Jimbo. It wasn't supposed to be about the merits or otherwise of winters.
I have a set of 18"/19"'s for my Evora and this will be my 4th winter with them on one my Evoras (this is my 4th). It will be the first winter on a Supercharged one however so time will tell. It runs on 19"/20"'s normally. Still only partly worn and is is stated elsewhere means the summer Pirelli Corsa's last much longer and not just becuase they aren't fitted. Summer tyres below their temperature working range, and I think Pirelli Corsas are something like 5C, not only don't they grip as good at a mechanical level due to water/snow/ice etc. but also at a molecular/chemical level as they become 'hard' in effect. They also degrade faster like this and they are scarily fast wearing at 7-8K a set on the rears anyway.
Has anybody tried Craig at MMC for a deal for Elises for winters? I know a lot of Evora owners bought their Yokohama Winters package which for most of us included a full set of original alloys and in many cases the TPMS sender on each as well. It was a bit of a no brainer exercise if you actually needed/wanted a set price wise. I use the Evora 365 days a year when home and it is totally noticeable the change in the car if you have left it too late to say go over onto them. Only thing I do notice is it tends to tramline a little more and follow road contours or those dreaded inside lane lorry tyre ruts you see on the motorway.

Used mine as a daily driver one year and drove it on snow, got accused of showing off "power sliding round all the corners" in reality I was fighting to keep it on the road.

It's a combination of it's lightweight, low ride height hence poor general visibility & road clearance, average to poor headlights and general pain in the backside getting in and out that makes it a non starter for me. Choosing the use it on a bad day is different to having to use it every day to get to work. If you HAVE to use the Elise over the winter, Winter tyres are a smart move. Go 10mm narrower too - adjust profile accordingly.
But if you have a choice - park it up and use the bus. Chances of a prang are so much higher. Notwithstanding Dom's very good point.
I have 14 years experience of an S1 in winter and it's not the most credible choice, I have to say. If nothing else the salt content will kill all those lovely new suspension bits Craig is currently fitting for you

Ha! Good point! I might chum up my dearest mother and borrow her micra when it gets bad. I have to say, it's actually a hoot in the snow, you can handbrake round every slow corner and it simply never spins!
