Insurance

Post by pete » Mon Jan 13, 2014 8:42 pm

Quick question.

I've got my Mum's old car temporarily. I'm insured to drive it as I am insured to drive car's not owned by me on my policy. But the car is no longer insured by her - is that OK to drive?

Normally the car that's not yours needs to be insured. I would be pretty sure you're not covered.

Not covered. To be sure, call your insurance. Of it's only for a short time they should be able to add it to your policy.

Any idea why? I thought the minimum was I had to be insured third party - which I am.

Needs to be insured by the owner/keeper from what I remember reading on policies, though that was some years ago.

The car is only insured 3rd party when you're driving.
At other times, it would be effectively uninsured. ie: parked on the street, etc.

I believe that you wouldn't be insured, but your policy may be different so read terms/give them a call and check.

For your 3rd party to be valid the car has to be insured. Phone your insurance company it will only cost a couple of quid.

Tis the same across the board Pete, regardless of the insurance company.

If your insurance policy covers you to drive other cars with 3rd party cover, and it is becoming rarer, that car must have a valid insurance policy covering it, normally in the name of the registered owner. The car is not allowed on the road otherwise.

Cheers Tut, this is from my policy... No mention of "and it must be insured by the owner..." I'll let you know how I get on. (I've, ahem, considered using it before to drive cars owned by Mrs Pete but not insured by either of us. She always said I shouldn't, it seems you lot all agree with her. I'm disappointed in you all.)

The policyholder may also drive a motor car not belonging to the policyholder and not hired to the policyholder under a
hire-purchase agreement or leased to the policyholder under a leasing agreement, provided that;
The policyholder has the owner's permission to do so; and
the policyholder still has the vehicle identified above by its registration mark and it has not been damaged beyond
economical repair nor been stolen and not recovered; and
the motor car is registered within the UK; and
the policyholder is not using the motor car outside of the UK; and
the policyholder is not insured under any other insurance to drive the motor car

It's a standard thing Pete - as someone said above, it's possibly fine when you're driving it, but when you leave it, it's technically uninsured, therefore not legal to have on the public highway.

The car you are driving under your own 3rd party cover has to be insured under its own policy Shug, otherwise if you had three cars you would be able to insure one and drive the other two.

Also under the new legislation a car has to be insured even if it is not going to be driven on the road, i.e. it is in your garage, unless you SORN it.

Even if it's in the garage it needs insurance if it's not been SORN'd. In fairness to DVLA they are very good at reminding me.

B*gger.
You're all correct, I need to insure the f.cking thing. OK All you part time car dealers how do you do this?

(Currently just pointing out to Tesco that it doesn't mention this in their terms and conditions but more for sport as it says on the DVLA site a car must be insured.)
