The reasoning behind it is sound and other than the fact you can't drive a newly purchased car away it's not a bad thing . But I wonder if you will get a full refund when you cash in your sold cars tax

I suspect it'll be a money spinner too for HMG as the car will be taxed twice in the month it is sold :(

From Stephen @ James Glen Cars - his FB page

Another stinker from our thieving Government:

NON-TRANSFERABLE ROAD TAX

At some point this year, the Government will be tightening the grip on road tax even further. This shocking revelation will deem tax discs worthless if the car is sold/ownership of the vehicle transferred to another. Example: if you give/sell your car to a friend which has 5month months tax remaining - the tax will become invalid. That's really fair isn't it? Now, instead of selling the car with the tax, you will need to surrender the disc by filling out a V14 and await the surrender value which will not include the month you are currently on, oh, and you will probably have to wait the statutory six weeks. Come to think of it... Why would they rush, when they can stitch you up for another month.

This is in addition to the revised 2008 road tax reclaim conditions where by only the registered keeper can surrender a disc. This alone costs our business in excess of 2000.00 yr.

When are they going to stop, or when is everyone going to stand up and refuse to take this rubbish!

Sick to the core with this. Just another method of bleeding this country dry.

This public announcement was brought to you by a very miffed Stephen of James Glen

I think this information should be shared, allowing as many to know what is in store for us, as rest assured the Government definitely won't publicise it, just like they failed to let everyone know about the last change in 2008

I'd be ver interested to know everyone's thoughts on this.

Getting rid of the paper tax disc in the window makes sense. As it says in the link, it is basically just a receipt. Cant see why the tax can't just stay with the car though. It would be easy to add the taxation status to these on line or text car buyer checker services that already tell you if it has been stolen, outstanding HP, been in an accident etc. Removes a lot of bureaucracy for everyone - owner, buyer and HMRC

As I just discovered how much of a pain this continual insurance is. I can just imagine the conversation.

"After speaking to our advisers in the insurance industry we have decided that cars should always be insured. And they have assured us that they will facilitate that for our customers. Sorry subjects. Citizens. Citizens. Not Subjects. Or customers."

Temporary insurance costs more in administration fees than insurance.

There should be no road tax, it should be on fuel. No emissions maths to do. More fuel = more tax. I should be in charge.

I'll vote for that :thumbsup
Hardly seems fair or logical that someone with say an RX-8 that does 1000 weekend miles per year pays £475 pa whilst your Double Glazing Salesman in his diesel Insignia clocks up 35,000 miles pa and pays £105.
It would also mean that all those drivers shy of having car tax would pay assuming they get their fuel the conventional way and not from their Farmer mate.

There is enough tax hidden in our fuel costs.. it would be too easy for them to screw us at the pumps like they do! I don't see the merit in surrendering you tax disc upon sale of a vehicle unless they are doing it to screw you out of the remainder of the months tax and charge the new owner from the start of the same month?? But that said if they're doing away with the disc there is no reason the tax can't run from any day of the month for 6 or 12 months, I assume the reason it was done til the end of the month prior was because of the cost of the discs being printed with specific dates on them?? With the new computerised system in place I see no reason you shouldn't be able to buy a car on the 21st of a month and have your tax run until the 21st of the month in 6 or 12 months time! I'm sure either way we'll get shafted! did i read somewhere there would be a direct debit option to pay the tax? If so that's a great idea to take us forward from the dark ages and stop us being hit with tax bills in a oner.... I'm no fan of the current government and their misguided greed lead ways! Bloody corrupt world we live in if you ask me!

They need to re-coup the Black Hole in their finances as more and more cars pay either zero or very little road tax under the current system.

You have to surrender the disc if the car isn't insured at the moment anyway I think.

When we bought the Alfa, I hadn't sold the Seat, and had to shift the insurance over / cash in the tax disc, then sell the car without tax, which was a pita, though probably less so if no cars have tax...

I suppose it means that more people will become wise to buying a new car on or near the 1st of the month to minimise the loss..

Given how badly their insurance database works, I dread to think what will happen when they do away with tax discs.
