Great sentences.

Post by tut » Wed Feb 26, 2014 7:07 pm

One will die in prison, the other 68 years before even a review.

For once I am glad that there is no death sentence, they will be looking over their shoulders for the rest of their lives.

Well done Judge.

Yup, they'll be prime targets for some of the nutters inside to vent aggression - I'd hope that the screws will turn suitably blind eyes.

Glad to see this, all too often the prison sentence doesn't seem to match the crime these days.

If the punishment was longer then it should deter the crimes being committed in the first place.

I think that the Ian Brady and Myra Hindley (sp?) received the same sentence. If you commit murder, show no remorse and say you would do the same thing again, the courts have little choice but to give this type of sentence.

I think this official 'whole life' sentence became available more recently than Moors Murders period. I think with Brady it was effectively the same recommended sentence by the judge - but not with the same formal power?

Assume England/Wales is different to Scotland.

<edit to add> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pr ... fe_tariffs So Brady and others kept in by successive Home Secretaries, whereas now it's the judge who decides. Quite a few all told.

Excellent sentences, hopefully they aren't released by a future government because it's politically valuable.

There is this problem with the EU Human Rights(spit) who are trying to tell us that we can not enforce this sentence. However it is good to see this statement.

In its latest act of defiance against the Strasbourg court's rulings, UK ministers have said the government will not grant inmates the right to a review of lifetime terms of imprisonment imposed on them.

"The government remains firmly of the view that whole-life tariffs are wholly justified in the most heinous cases, and that they should continue to be available to the courts. We will be strenuously arguing in the court of appeal [in other related cases] that a judge can and must impose a whole life order in cases such as these."

So fcuk you Strasbourg............

Agree with the sentences but find it strange that anyone would thing similar crimes less likely to be committed due to the length of sentences they are likely to receive?

It's pathetic that a group who claim to be for human rights can say such a thing in defence of those who have taken away someone else's rights, and life! Maybe they need to redefine the word human!

Tut, you've said it all in the subject - Great sentences!

The EU Court of Human Rights have found in favour of this 'Whole Life' system (despite attempts to appeal such sentences). The fact there is technically always the possibility of release by a Home Secretary means they're happy when the crimes justify whole life.

Agreed - these sentences are not deterrents; they are simply containment of those who would inevitably repeat their crimes if released. I am quite sure that the people who committed these crimes would have happily faced a death sentence also and would have committed just the same crime.

I have no sympathy with them at all, but I do wonder what happens to people to make them like that ...

Robin

There's more to it than that Tut - there are literally billions of people on the planet with religious beliefs and they don't turn to massacring people. And plenty are massacred with no religion being involved, or it being involved only tangentially - e.g. "tribal" disputes between genuine tribes or just gangs.

Cheers,
Robin
