Scottish Elises

I took part in a size & shape survey the other week, ran by RGU on behalf of O&G UK - The lad undertaking the 3D scan of me stated that blooming Asda are offering a similar service, and will actually print out a model of you...

What are you getting at??? I have had three done of myself (it was hard work holding in my stomach for the scan). Having one fitted as a mascot on the front of the elise Bit like a spirit of ecstasy, but more like a spirit of vanity.

I wanted a personal facsimile of Brussels' Maneken Pis, but ASDA were having none of it and their security threw me out...

Is that a euphemism?

I find Selective laser sintering / melting fascinating and I would love to get my hands on it for commercial applications. First time I saw it was around 98 back when they used to have a Scottish engineering show at the SECC.

We have a small 3D printer in the office - it's a laser-into-bath-of-gunk type; can go down to 0.025mm layer thickness, though we normally print in 0.1mm for basic modelling. It's quite slow also (can take a couple of hours to print something with 200 layers = 20mm thick).

I would recommend one to anybody that has a commercial need for 3D printing as it cuts down your R&D costs dramatically.

Come on then Robin, 'fess up, what have you been making "out of hours" "in your own time" ?

I haven't printed anything frivolous - somebody printed a butterfly hairclip (that is the test model that comes with the machine) and a hippo or elephant with articulated snout (didn't work due to using the wrong settings).

So far I've printed off a few prototypes and nothing else. I am open to suggestion for sensible things to print, though the materials are quite expensive, so a 1/10th scale model of the Titanic is not on the cards
