My Mother in Law (83) has a Baxi boiler in her house at Gullane, she asked the Gas Board to have a look at it as she was having a problem with it. GB said they couldn't work on the system as it has asbestos and it would have to be replaced with a different style unit at an approximate cost of £6k. At her age she is reluctant to part with £6K. I wondered if anyone could recommend a good heating engineer in the area who could advise on repairs or alternatives.

I'm a couple of miles from your MIL. I can recommend these guys if they are willing to travel out from Edinburgh, which I think they will. He fixed the problems with the installation of my boiler on my new build and also some issues with my UFH. Since then I have recommended him to 3 others on our estate and they have been happy with his work too.

I have also used these guys who are local in North Berwick to fix a leak on a cracked drainage pipe under the floorboards. So it wasn't gas related but they are Corgi registered and I was happy with their work and found their rates reasonable.

We had exactly the same problem at my mother in laws place 18 months ago with a baxi back boiler in the fireplace.
We ended up fitting a combi boiler in a different location for about £3200 if I remember correctly. We did away with the separate electric water heating and storage system and I think the bills are around £40 per month cheaper.

The whole job took the guys a day for a 2/3 bed council house by retaining the existing radiators and piping and fitting thermostats to them all.
We received a payment of £400 from the boiler replacement scheme which Hendeg refers to. Just need the engineer to sign the form which you download from the schemes website.

The gas board are a job I'm shocked they even got out there van I don't think there doing the free central heating now cheers Colin
