New Car

Jeremy is feeling rather pleased with himself.

I have been looking at some incredible lease offers recently but when this one dropped into my inbox I completely caved in. Order has been placed and hopefully I will get the car in September.

Yes, the mileage allowance is low before someone points this out. But it's very straightforward and inexpensive to increase it. I found it was more cost efficient to keep it at 5k and pay for the extra miles when handing it back rather than increasing the allowance at the outset. And this means I pay for what I actually use rather than what I may use.

I have always been anti-new car and didn't think I'd see the day I would order a brand new car but I have spent hours doing the maths and on the scenarios I was using, running an older interesting car will always cost more. There are so many hidden costs. Depreciation, £500 road tax, unexpected repair bills, breakdown cover, less fuel efficient.

I will be reshuffling the fleet to accommodate the R but of course the S1 is a keeper and will be staying. I should also add that the R is an incredible piece of kit, Golfs are so commonplace on the road that it's hard to believe how blisteringly quick and usable this car is, and nice and discrete too.

Regards,

Jeremy

Nice work Jeremy.

I've never been comfortable with leasing but when you find deals like that it makes a lot of sense. For what it's worth I love my GTI, it's the perfect family car for me at the moment.

Enjoy the R :cheers

Nice one! Excuse my ignorance, what power and performance does the 'R' have? Looks like a great deal. :thumbsup

4WD with 296bhp / 280lb/ft... 0-62mph in around 5 seconds, limited to 155mph.

They're getting far better reviews than the Mk6 Golf R :thumbsup

Sounds tasty! My old GTi (Mk5) was a great all-rounder, if a little thirsty. That "R" looks like a great package, at a great price,... hmmm....

The DSG equipped car has been clocked at 4.6secs 0-60 and the manual 4.9. It feels effing quick in any gear at any speed that's for sure. Mid to high 30's MPG too.

What surprised me the most was how engaging it felt to drive, I was expecting it to be a fairly typical blunt but efficient VAG effort but that wasn't the case.

Jeremy

Colleague just picked up one of these on similar deal. Got me thinking.

Great minds think a like, I placed my order last week for a 3 door DSG model in white for £255 a month including vat and 2 years road tax. I've haven't leased a car before but this deal is stupidly cheap. It's going to be a long 12 week wait though.

Looks a good deal , not really up to speed on lease deals like this do you ever get the chance to buy at the end or do you always have to hand back.

had a look at the gti and r for other half, depending on spec (19s/nav/dcc) a 4yr pcp on the r 5 door dsg can be had for near 465 per month.

The beetle is even £2 a month cheaper. What were you thinking?

There's a massive thread on pistonheads and the golf R forum and they can't get a PCP deal to come close to beating the leasing deal. These lease deals are for 5000 miles per year but the excess mileage is only 6p per mile which makes it cheaper to do for my 12,000 miles per year mileage rather than going for the 10,000 mile lease option. The deal is ultimately through VW finance and you will have an option to purchase it but I suspect I'd be trying to get a similar leasing deal again if I can.

Great minds indeed Clan :) Your car sounds virtually the same mine although I have gone for the 5dr. Stuck with the standard 18" wheels as well despite the temptation of the 19's.

You can call the lease company towards the end of the lease and get a price for buying the car but I'm led to believe the prices they quote are plucked directly from cuckoo land. I think they are providing subtle encouragement to go back and lease another one and lets be honest, why would you want to sink 20 large (approx) into a car you've ragged senseless for 2 years when it would be cheaper to go and lease another new one ? I'm sure there will be something equally as tasty on special terms when the time comes to return the R.

Jeremy
