I'm bored, so looking at new jobs and toys and stuff...

Post by DDtB » Tue Jun 17, 2014 11:04 am

To say work is dull just now would be an understatement so when I'm not looking at Pistonheads and trying to convince myself that an XKRS or R8 etc. would be a sensible everyday shed, I'm now going off on random internet journeys and looking at totally different jobs.

This week I've been mostly browsing microlight sites (thanks Jim for posting all those pics  ) and it seems they're surprisingly cheap to buy and own :blackeye But that got me thinking.

Once upon a time I was going to be an airline pilot but after a bit of try before you buy experiences, it kinda put me off and wasn't as exciting as I'd hoped. I always loved pottering about in Chipmunks and gliders and stuff in the ATC and I've been meaning to go about getting my license one day.

So other than airline pilot, anybody know of any decent flying type jobs out there that are actually achievable to get within a couple of years training and stuff? Thinking if I was going to get around to getting some kind of license one day, would make sense to see if any could end up in a job one day rather than just for fun. If that's possible that is.

Off to look at deep sea diving sites now.

Cheers!

:cheers

You would make a great Cabin Crew. :blackeye Think its a six week course.

If you can get into ROV's you could become an ROV pilot.

Costs a small fortune to become an airline pilot. You almost need to think of the training costs as a mortgage, but at least with a proper mortgage you get somewhere to live. With airline training you don't even get a guaranteed job at the end and the co-pilot on an Ryanair flight could probably earn more by working full-time at McDonalds cooking burgers.

Microlight instructor job is great... in theory. Lots and lots and lots and lots of hours at £130/hr plus you get paid to fly for fun. Unfortunately that can translate into lots and lots and lots of hours waiting for the weather to let you go flying and you could probably earn more by working full-time at McDonalds cooking burgers.

Hmmm. Have you thought about a job at McDs??? ;)

Definitely not interested in being an airline pilot these days. That was just the childhood dream.

Just wondering what other flying type jobs might exist.

Last time I tried to go flying in a mirolight it took over a month to get a saturday with decent enough weather! That was in October iirc.

I've just realised how similar my current job is to prison.....

I sit tied to a single location all day, trying to find ways to pass the time. Canteen serves us slops at lunchtime. Language all day is abusive (mostly mine tbh). Everyone is miserable and wishes they were somewhere else. We can see freedom through the window and see others out enjoying it, but we're not allowed out.

Try bank robbing - if youre successful you will be instantly rich and able to live off your earnings. If youre not you will be in actual prison but as that is similar to your current employment it wont be so bad. :thumbsup

Nephew did the following.

Emigrated to Canada and wanted to be a professional skateboarder. Bacame a building site labourer. Saved his wages. Got his PPL. Flew crop dusters. Qualified on twin engine planes. Flew around the oil fields of Canada for years. Became bored. Started flying water bombers. Became unbored. Qualified on a number of different water bombers and fire spotter planes. Became very good at flying very low. Became scared. Now in early forty's, as a water bomber trainer (Conair Aerial Firefighting - http://conair.ca/) and messing about with fast cars and boats. Married an extremely attractive female commercial pilot. 2 kids, 2 porsche's (one old, one new) and I really hate him.

I know it is flying but it is not really....
