Car rally in Tenerife this weekend ?

Post by IanD » Fri Jul 11, 2014 11:52 pm

I'm in Tenerife in Costa Adeje, we drove up and down to Mount Tiede yesterday on road TF-51 then TF-21 , amazing road 50km of snaking mountain roads to get to the middle of the National park going from sea level to 2800m.
Unfortunately was in our hire Seat Leon (1.4 I think) but the most limiting factor on the way up were my passengers, had to stop for a break as my daughter was about to be sick  pity I wasnt on my own and with the Elise

Anyway on way back they were putting red tape up for spectator out of bounds areas on the outside of corners as road is closed for the weekend for 'an automotive event', I'm presuming for a local rallye but I can't find any references with my limited web access or from the couple of people I've asked.
Anyone find anything at all on web, as fancy going to watch but can't find any info at all searching for rally July/ tenerife/ adeje or Tiede ?

Found stuff from a rally earlier in the year but nothing listed for July. This is a video of the road I drove, 90% of it is perfect tarmac with amazing corners as well as great views changing from countryside to rocky hillside into forest then lava landscape.

There are a lot of great roads in the mountains. I have driven almost every road on the island, been there nearly forty times (family house there). A lot of the roads away from the tourist areas are deserted, and mostly have a great surface.

Masca is well worth a visit, just for the scenery.

There is a Canarian tarmac rally championship which is very well supported. there will be a real mix of cars from old fiat pandas, BMW m3s (e30), 911s and a few Ferraris. Thew are quite a few vids on YouTube.

I'm in Tenerife just now. Crappy cars in Los Christianos! How much was your hire car as I'm planning getting one to head up for Loro Parque this week? Cheers

Autoraisen are the best for hire cars. Try and get one that is covered in scrapes, so when the locals add more to it, the company won't bother / notice :thumbsup

Hope weather is good for you DJ, hot here but lots of days with clouds which appear and disappear over the day.
Only had car hire for 3 days which ended yesterday. Places were offering 48€ for a twingo but only for dates 2 weeks away so not sure if the offer really exists. All the places I looked were charging 79€ for 3 days all insurance covered , 5dr air con car, we got an older style Leon but it was ok, from autos 3000 in las Americas. Ours had lots of scratches /dents so took pics of all round the car but they didn't seem too bothered about it. They might discount the price for park tickets if you buy at the same time as car, no one was discounting the stated 79€ but a couple said they could discount park tickets but we had already been to Siam park (and enjoyed it).

Wish I had known before I came that you knew the island well Dom would have asked for some advice and tips.

I decided to go up mountain anyway yesterday to see if rally was on and did find it. Cycled up to Arona, 1800ft height and 10km of cycling from Adeje in my professional (not) beach shorts, t-shirt, cap, beach cool bag on my back with 3litres of water and a seemingly 100 pound (cost and weight !!) local hire mountain bike along with 30C baking sun using google maps to work out roads and a bit of off road paths on way up. I only do mountain biking so was pleased to find I could do a slow pace uphill for an hour or two without dying although I was in very low gears and the road bikes guys flew past me. Found the rally just before point of giving up cycling uphill, had a good wander round the shelters checking out cars and managed to watched most of them over one of the runs, think they were doing 3 runs over the day. A real mix of cars from Saxos, fiestas, corsas, an old simca, fiat 131, loads of BMW e30's including 2 M3's, a couple of recent Porsche 911 and a 80's one, ferrari 360 and a couple of single seaters mostly as per Dom mentioned. Was good to see them all. Not sure how far the stage was as I was near the start but must have been fun driving it. Cycled back down partly on road but mostly paths off road on what seemed to be gravel and rocky dry water flows using what I could see and google maps to work out a routes, my cheapo suspension mtb not really coping but a great fun 4hrs out and a bit unexpected for a beach/pool holiday.
Will upload a few pics later.

I was thinking of hiring a road bike as part of my Ride the North training....that I haven't done yet! Can I nick any cool pics for my FB page?
Think I'll walk along with the family for some lunch and pop in to Autoreisen place for a car for Monday and Tuesday....hopefully the cloud will have lifted by the time we get back!
Hey if you have an iPhone with my app on it let me know....I'll screen grab a group map pic with you for my FB page lol

Yes Any I've got your app. Usually online in evening time from 8-11pm.

Some pics towards the end of the run after I got a better viewpoint so unfortunately missed some of the more interesting older cars

Used google maps, a bit of guess work and looking down where the gravel paths were mostly to decide the off road route down as per this pic.

No problems, saw your facebook post.
I hired from volata sport in playa de las Americas they also do specialised road bikes but I would check before hiring as they may be tired the mountain bike I got is rubbish, bikepoint seem to be the premier hire in tenerife. Going up to Tiede would be an awesome challenge we drove and it was hard enough, we went up the final 800m by cable car to 3700m, 1st time I've felt altitude just walking up and down amongst the rocks, Katie my 14yr old daughter blacked out at the top

A lot of the Tour guys train up there I think. I'll just get back to training when I get home. The heat would probably kill me haha!
