Retaining private reg

Post by tut » Mon Dec 08, 2014 7:00 pm

Ian has just sold his car and the new owner at present is driving it with N1 TUT on it. Could someone tell me what the order is for retaining it and having the car put back on its original plate.

Does he do the V5 first for change of owner, then the retention, or is it done in one?

Tut, you must do the retention doc first. If you do a change of owner first the reg no will pass to the new owner, and it will be a hassle to get it back.

It is a PITA, and they rob you of £105 for the privelage!

Selling privately you should have put N1 TUT on retention and had the cars original plates put back on the car. That would be £105 of which £80 is the assignment fee and £25 the retention cert for a year.
Had it been a dealer i.e. part exchange they normally take care of the transfer or retention but no getting away from paying the £105.

Thanks guys, just confirmed that he is doing it the correct way around. The buyer is also putting his own private plate on. As he is a Bank Manager, this would seem appropriate.

You can do it all at once; I've just simultaneously done a change of owner and retention; spoke to the dvla and you have to send two cheques (one for retention and one for the new owners tax) as well as some other forms and the entire v5.

Retaining private reg

When I bought the Elise it had a private plate on which we agreed he was keeping. We signed the docs at the point of sale. I took the car with the plate and waited on the new v5 with the new reg number. As soon as the new v5 came in I changed the plate. He kept the plate and it went onto another car he had rather than retention. Seemed pretty straightforward.

When I bought the Exige off Pete we were doing the same; car transaction + 2 private plates, one of which was on retention. We laid it all out in a letter and put all the forms, retention certificates, V5s and cheques etc. in together so hopefully one person would deal with it in the right order at DVLA. Whatever happened , there was a fcuk up and stuff got processed out of sequence and it got sent back to us and we had to re-submit and generally go through it in two or three stages.

Best thing about buying through SE or someone you trust though. I probably had the right to Pete's plate, or vice versa, for a week or two but never any risk advantage of such a situation would be taken.

Hey everybody,

Unfortunately there was no time to put the plate on retention as I was away for 4 weeks then once I got back the buyer wished to buy and collect the car immediately. I did google search and I outlined to him that the value of the plate is sentimental not physical. He will happily comply as that was the terms of the sale. I just want to know the correct process so that I can get this done first time.

I haven't sent away the V5 yet so from reading above it seems if I complete the relevant forms then I can send in the V5 confirming the new owner along with the form to put my plate on retention at the same time?

Reading DJ's post Ian it may be worth doing them separately.

Worth giving the DVLA a call just to check.

ps:- it is actually worth £1K+ to newreg.co.uk

That's how it worked when I bought the Elise with no issues.

I always make a point of putting the cherished number on retention when the car goes on the market.

Everything runs smoothly that way.

Best way Campbell, but this is Ian.

Life has been hectic though, away in Holland for four weeks, getting the house and garden in shape, selling the house, car, and motorbike, packing up for Canada, sorting out all the paperwork, changing Banks etc.

Lol. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he wouldn't choose to do it the way it's turned out.

Glad you're living life to the full, Ian!
