A90 Highway Robbery

Post by Mr Momo » Wed Dec 31, 2014 8:14 pm

Just back from taking the Abarth to Glasgow for some recall work. Filled it up this morning with V Power @ 119p/l . Wet drive, delayed by average speed cameras from Perth to Dunblane and an accident nr Stirling.

Quick gander round the showroom, with a £30k Abarth 595 50th Anniversary special in metallic matt ivory paint with Ferrari 360 Modena replica wheels looked nice ( and we discussed the £50k Biposto nutter machine ).

Found the car washed ( pointless  ) and vacuumed for the return trip, plus a nice bottle of Italian Merlot and a winter safety kit on the passenger seat 8) .

Was running low about Forfar (only has a small tank and its a good day above 30mpg ! ), so pulled into Stracathro to fill up - 148p/l for boggo Gulf unleaded. Yes 148p/l  - needless to say, it was a quick splash and dash

Beware...

Thought that everybody knew about Stracathro Phil, they do not even post their prices anymore.

Prime candidate for going up in flames, disgusting place, we only use it as a meeting up point on runs.

I'm not trying to justify it, I don't even know where this garage is, but if it's so expensive, it's probably very rarely used, in which case they might still have petrol in the tanks, that was bought when it was expensive.

It's right on the A90 between Brechin and Stonehaven. Beside a psychiatric unit.

The truckers use it as there is loads of space around the back, but not sure if they refuel there at those prices.

Several S/S on the route charging £1.15 or less.

MOD frequent it as 4spd landies do horrendous mpg and need to fill up between Aberdeen and Arbroath. Plus they don't care.

As tut says it's mainly lorry drivers and other people who don't care about the price as they have fuel cards or what like.

Even temple of fiddis (South bound side nearer stoney) is cheaper.

Best trying to hold off till Stonehaven or Forfar.

It was back when I was having to get up to Aberdeen for 9am meeting, then drive back to Edinburgh at noon - was usually in need of some caffeine by the time I was passing on the way home. The place was without doubt sh*t but luckily the Elise could round trip Edinburgh to Aberdeen without stopping for fuel :-)

A90 Highway Robbery

Post by campbell » Sat Jan 03, 2015 11:39 pm

My earliest memory of Stracathro was a pit stop en route to a high school rugby tour vs Robert Gordon's. When the A90 was mostly single carriageway all the way. Jeez.

We got cuffed, as it happens.

And it poured with rain all weekend. Horizontally.

There's always a pretty ripe smell coming from the staff any time I've ventured in.
