Re: Exige paddle shift
Is this a DSG type box or old school slosh box?

Auto in mechanics - no space in there for DSG - but more rapid than any other auto box, lots and lots of Bosch expertise in there too....quite something to plant the throttle and watch it take off - quicker to 100 than the manual....mwmackenzie wrote:Is this a DSG type box or old school slosh box?

No details about the "Auto"? If there was no space for a DSG/DCT type twinclutch then is it a traditional Automatic with Torque Converter or an SMG type with a Clutch and electrohydraulic actuation?
Certainly not my choice but if it helps Lotus and allows them to also provide "proper" manuals then I am all for it.

Featured in the motoring section of today's Scotsman.... bizarrely with a large pic of a circa 6 year old 1.8l pre facelift Exige S
(in a nice colour though
)

It's a torque converter, SMG hasn't been used by many for a while

Fixed that for you GGraemeLotus wrote:Auto in mechanics - no money to develop a proper twin clutch gearbox so all we could do was sprinkle some fairy dust over the off-the-shelf Toyota one - but more rapid than any other auto box, lots and lots of Bosch expertise in there too....quite something to plant the throttle and watch it take off - quicker to 100 than the manual....mwmackenzie wrote:Is this a DSG type box or old school slosh box?

mating an engine from someone with a gearbox from someone else doesn't usually work very well in any case.......

Re: Exige paddle shift
Are DSG gearboxes fairly heavy lumps anyway? Latest auto stuff seems to be getting good reviews. The gearbox BMW use (8 speed auto) gets rave reviews, and is considerably lighter than the DSG. Even if there was the space to fit a DSG on an Exige, I doubt the weight conscious engineers would have opted for it.
Good to see Lotus giving buyers more options, and increasing their potential market

Re: Exige paddle shift
As I am getting older and lazier an Automatic appeals more and more, would have liked to stick a CVT in mine but without the fake gear changes one that has the engine sitting at peak torque all the time

Twin clutch box is slightly heavier than a manual and considerably lighter than a conventional auto. Have a google and you'll see the typical range of figures.
And with pedant hat firmly on head, DSG is an acronym unique to VW, so if Lotus went down the twin clutch route it wouldn't be marketed as DSG. In the same way that Dyson don't market their products as Hoovers.

Buy an RS6. Who needs CVT when you've got monster torque on tap all the timeBiggestNizzy wrote:As I am getting older and lazier an Automatic appeals more and more, would have liked to stick a CVT in mine but without the fake gear changes one that has the engine sitting at peak torque all the time

Arriving broadside, in a cloud of smoke......
Re: Exige paddle shift
The Exige now shares an old skool slushbox with that great driving machine, the Toyota Camry. Exciting news
