Elise medal for Robin........

Post by tut » Fri Oct 06, 2006 8:09 am

Just for the record, I went along to Marks at Banchory today, to meet up with Robin, who was having a geo set up done, and had also bought up the two rear Maxsports as part of the set that he has kindly donated to keep N1TUT on the track appeal.

Being Robin, and as Mark was doing the tech stuff on his car and he was hanging around like a spare prick at a wedding, he insisted on trying to troubleshoot this problem I have had since last February, when the engine was out for a clutch change, since when it has been taking five turn overs to start, idling at 1400rpm, and with a deterioration in fuel consumption.

Of course he does not know the Honda engine layout, but worked out how many fuel/temp senders it must have, worked through them, and then found one on the engine block partly hidden, with the plug hanging out. Pushed it in, and voila, rpm down to 850. Fair bet that it will also start from cold first thing in the morning. He was also confident that the fuel consumption would also return to normal. However forgot to ask him if it could have had any effect on performance, as it could well have been feeding none or duff information to the ECU as regards fuelling and timing.

Always satisfying to get a result.

resetting the ecu is best done by disconnecting the battery and leaving it unattached overnight.

Pressing the pedal with the ignition on only resets the idle air control valve on a K (obv no use to Tut).

Not sure which sensor it was that was unplugged, Robin will elucidate, but I doubt if anything would have worked with the plug out.

Just going to see if she will now start first time.

She started so quickly, nearly bit my hand off, then settled down to an 800rpm tickover.

800 RPM = 12Hz - probably about right :-)

The sensor that was disconnected was the block coolant temp sensor.
