Usual AA farce.

Post by tut » Thu Jul 09, 2015 2:19 pm

My membership was due for renewal last week, but as it was for four family members, four cars on P&L, and full cover for everything, they wanted £520 but I would have talked £100 off that.

However we are now down to Verian and the Honda, so called up for a quote for breakdown and P&L and was told that it would be £367. After I had finished laughing I asked Mikey if he would do the sums again for me, and he came back with £194 plus he would send me a Mastercard with £40 credit on it, so down to £154. I have to wait 14 days before I can make a claim, but that should not be a problem with the amount we are using the car here.

ps:- hypothetical question, but if we were driving along and all the warning lights came on, all the dials went to zero, radio and electric windows not working, wiper crawled across the screen, engine kept running but only two miles from home, any idea what would cause that lot?

Theoretically the belt is fine, but battery voltage at 8.5v so alternator would be the suspect.

Our renewal was £280. - online equivalent £159
When I called I was reminded of all the extras I was getting as a Gold member  (oooer misses) for the extra money. When I asked them to justify how key cover and accident assistance was worth an extra £120 they dropped the price to £165 - maintained the Gold cover and I redeemed £150 cash back so quite happy with £15 for the year. :thumbsup

Is the AA P&L worth having?

I pay about £95 a year for cover for my Mini.

At the start of the year it needed a new ECU wiring harness and throttle body- a known fault apparently but still a £1k+ bill from an independent specialist.

The AA P&L paid for the first £500 of the bill- just over £500 was far easier to stomach than just over £1000!
If you have an older or not quite so reliable car then it's not a great deal of money to pay out for the peace of mind that it gives in my opinion.

I have heard too many tales of AA P&L wriggling out of paying claims - is that still the case?

You have to make sure that you use the correct wording when you make the claim. On my last one they slipped in that the car must be non drivable from the breakdown point and uplifted to a garage. This was not the case in the past and caught me out when the ABS and VSA lights came on and I drove it to John Duthie's and called from there for the Patrol. They also caught me out on the other clause that it must not be driven again until repaired. As the cause was a failure of the hydraulic pump that only affected those two, and he would need the car for two weeks, I left it until we went on holiday and did not need the car.

When he phoned in to give an estimate of the repair cost and the mileage it was a few hundred miles more than the breakdown date and they turned the claim down. Will make sure that I get it correct next time
