Petrol And Diesel Pricing, What's Going On?
I can't get my head round why Diesel has gone from being 10-12p more a litre than petrol to 4p a litre less? I'm guessing if oil price drops both will be reduced equally so has something else changed? production cost of diesel dropped or petrol production costs risen?
Did I not read recently that diesels were to be banned from city centres or a tax being inflicted on them due to pollution?? If this is the case and they are harming the environment more than petrol why make it cheaper to run them so more folk buy them? I mean 50+ mpg, ooodles of torque and cheaper fuel costs surely makes any petrol equivalent a no go? Or is it an elaborate government scam to boost diesel sales to whack great taxes on them in the future??
All when I move from Diesel to petrol of course hahahaha... twats!

Supply/demand I guess most cars sold in the last 5 or so years have been diesel... Economy in scale of production as a fraction to the amount of petrol being produced maybe because of this?

I think there is a combination of issues. I believe the UK processes enough unleaded petrol to meet demand, but we do import some diesel and some of the components which go into diesel. So Diesel is more linked to the European supply / demand equation and the exchange rate.
Diesel is generally quite a bit cheaper in Europe, although some of that may be due to specific tax differences. In Austria a couple of weeks ago diesel was 1.12 euros a litre, ie 80p, unleaded was a little more 1.18 euro/litre.
What does surprise me is how quickly diesel came down in price, totally different to the rate of change you see when the change is related to an oil price drop.

Not a chance this government would pass economic savings on to us hahahaha More Diesel cars equates to more revenue surely? As for cost of production, Diesel used to retail cheaper than petrol up until it became popular, in the 90's it cost less than petrol but your car sounded like a tractor so folk didn't bother with it. As diesel cars became more refined folk bought more of them so the price rose as it was a great new revenue stream for the governmentrawsco wrote:Supply/demand I guess most cars sold in the last 5 or so years have been diesel... Go to Luxembourg and pay 73p for diesel in the rip off motorway services. Imagine how cheap it would be at a supermarket

All when I move from Diesel to petrol of courseand with the DPF being dodgy on a diesel unless the vehicle is driven over a decent distance to regenerate, I think the normal rules apply. If it's for short journeys, Petrol is best. For long journeys, Diesel.

Diesel is the spawn of the Devil. I hate filling the works vans with the stuff.
People saying " I get 65mpg and I am saving the planet, it cost me 14p a day to go 500 miles "etc.
They ignore the DPF,particulate emissions, dual mass fly wheel, injectors issues, additional cost of buying and until recently more expensive fuel to list but a few.

I drive both. And since both fuels were on parity, albeit at ripoff price of 120p, at Peterborough A1 services today, I'm past caring!
Albeit our diesel costly markedly less to run than any of our other cars present or previous.

Even though the Panzer only gets 26mpg I want the oil price to go back up.
