Storm naming is allegedly to help raise public awareness.

But I think if you were in one you'd probably be pretty aware already!

I think they've been naming them for years - previously you only found out about the name on the BBC world service or similar :-)

Think the Met naming UK-impacting storms is a new thing. As recent as starting last year?

It's going to be a source of frustratiion/irritation * when folk start referring back to damage/floods caused several years ago by <insertStormNameHere> rather than <insertApproximateDateOfStormHere>. It's like giving every month, of every year, a unique given name when the calendar already works quite well for that!

* well, to me at least :P

Or are you saying you're not in favour of reduction and you also object to the cost of doing so?

Cheers,

Short answer is yes.

The long answer is far more complex and would probably bore the tits off everyone so I don't really want to continue to derail this thread.

:damnfunny

MSP's (mostly SNP) find that the fault was not predictable :damnfunny ....despite other reports be qualified engineers warning about.

Had to check the calendar for a moment... thought I had lost 3 weeks.

But was it preventable?

The engineers suggestion that the offending pin had probably been seized for years would suggest yes. They just weren't checking for it.

The result and minimal findings despite a lot of review does point to a slightly hasty dismissal of the event, only citing things that can be changed cheaply like process etc. :)

Still ahead of the contractual date of June, but not as early as hoped. Not that bad really.

I'd give them leeway for the weather. It really was rotten. But they're only getting a couple of months at most. And the approach roads better be ready by Dec or I won't believe the weather excuse ;-)

The SNP said it was still on schedule just before the Scottish election at the beginning of May. The weather since then has been perfect.......
