I think Chris Evans is trying too hard to replicate the old format rather than taking it and putting his own stamp on it. Matt was a bit better. Will see if they settle into the roles after a few episodes.

The old one was a very good car show which had become something not as good, something.more self indulgent.
They need to remember that at its heart it's about cars. Stop trying to be funny in EVERYONE line etc etc.

But I'm not the target market...

I remember reading of the second stone roses album John squire say about in his pants on the couch watching videos of jimmy page for months before recording it. It felt like Evans had done similar.

It was OK, but much work needed. Studio is crap. Hadn't watched TG for a few years before though as I couldn't stand Hammond and Clarkson any more, so from that pov it's a success.

I like TG. I like all the dicking about. I quite liked the schoolboy humour. The occasional special pieces Clarkson did were terrific TV both in terms of the presentation and the production. The BBC at its best in fact. Clarkson is a well observed car journalist, after all, and can be brilliant in his more serious thoughtful moments. I'm not keen on Evans, never have been so was disappointed they chose him even if it was more or less inevitable they did. He didn't disappoint in my expected disappointment! His over excited shouty style might work on his other shows but not on TG and I fear he won't get better or change his style. Joey had some moments of potential, especially to camera in car and I think will settle into it ok. The studio sections between them were cringeworthy which I'm putting down to first night newly wed nerves although my expectations are low for much improvement - Danny Baker is writing the jokes! God knows how much the BBC are spending on it but that first episode couldn't have been cheap!

TG Extra Gear was actually pretty good as a straight car show. Rory was especially good although Chris 'Arris is a one trick pony I think so they should leave him in the cars he drives as he does that well and can talk to the camera at the same time. In the studio he was a bit rabbit in the headlights and didn't have a great deal to say. It will be interesting to see how they evolve Extra Gear as it has potential to be very good.

Overall, at best, it was a poor carbon copy of Top Gear: it had the Top Gear music, the Stig, the crap jokes, the pointlessly contrived competitions, and the production but somehow wasn't quite Top Gear a bit like the body snatchers. At worst it was sh*t with moments that were slightly less sh*t.

Watched it last night and very Meh, I'll probably watch every episode to see the cars but I'm not sold on the presenter line up at all, Feels very wannabe in tone and gags... I think a new format would have been better and the ideal time to change to something maybe more informative? That's kinda what I was hoping for, bit of a dissa seeing it pretty much the same with similar tone and gags

Echoing all the other comments, Evans has been a live guy for years and a well known opinionated car but but this was horribly scripted and very non evans.

Matt leBlanc was by far better in his own, natural delivery and a genuine interest.

But I am happy there is a car programme back on again. Not watched the extra gear yet but if it's more akin to drive I expect it will do better and be more focused on cars than keeping the franchise going.

On his Radio 2 show last week Evans was having a wobble about how the show might turn out. This morning he sounded quite smug about how it went down. It seems that 4.4 million viewers watched against 5.8 million for the last series but the fact that it trumped the Antiques Roadshow, the Soap Awards and documentaries about the Yeti or the Sphinx means it's a winner :blackeye

Watched extra gear tonight... better in my opinion than top gear was. Not likely to be such a mainstream hit, but more interesting if you're a car nerd.

I think if they ditched copper-knob, and let Harris/Rory/Matt host it they might actually do better.

Watched it last night. It was an entertaining hour. Was it the best thing i've ever seen on TV? No but it was a lot better than 5th gear.

First episode and i have faith it will get better.
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?
