drifting the back end...

Post by ninja » Wed Sep 21, 2005 4:35 pm

now that i've had my elise for a few months i'm finding it quite natural to let the back end drift out around corners in the dry. does anyone else do this or am i heading for a crash?

i'm used to motorbikes and rearwheel steering those little buggers but in fairness i did over step the mark on 3 occassions and have the ducati skidding down the road..... so i'm not what you would call a good judge of "limit"

Feck me how the hell do you get it to go out in the dry. I have had it slip out once but that was because the back end was light.

I thought these things were best kept to the track and large roundabouts.

How are you drifting the back end out in the dry? To do that in mine takes a lot of provoking. Either a very late turn in to a corner on a trailing throttle, trailbraking or lifting off mid-corner. I've learnt all of these on a Walshy day or at KH and I wouldn't want to be doing any of them the on public roads, it's asking for a crash IMO.

normally just turning in late and flooring it tbh.

used to do it regularly in my old mx5 - bit harder to do in the elise tho, as it seems a bit more planted than the mx5.

only really do it on my way home thru eurocentral, well that's a lie tbh as i also do it off the bat at the traffic lights at elderslee st, small quiet roundabouts etc etc. all in very controlled situations tho - honest!

<<<<<<<<I'm partial to this style aswell. :P (see my thread on S2 suspention.) As all the folk who've followed me at Kh will vouch for. On track i like the rear to be moving slightly on the way in, i find i can control the car thru the turn better like this. (i done motocross for a while, so sliding is locked into my brain i think) But i've got S1 :D . Tend to do it in the wet coming off roundabouts, but if there's a deserted roundabout i just go in hard on neulral throttle, then it steps out smooth on the way in and just keep it out on the throttle. ( not for long though) I dont do it on anything faster than 2nd gear though. When the you powers slide a std Elise it you have to be on it as it's got lots of grip and there's a fine line between out and in. You cant just use grunt to get it out, so it's a lot to do with momentum. I find that on a roundabout once you've got the wheel 90deg to the left eg, half a turn) thats about the limit, any more and the weight in the rear pulls the back round.

ah well it's all good fun. if i'd wanted a sensible car i'd have bought one with a back seat and boot space.
