Help me find a low cost street bicycle...

Post by Jam_s160 » Tue Sep 13, 2016 7:58 am

Help me find a low cost street bicycle... Bit of a cross post from Seloc.

Hi folks, my nephew has started Uni and for his 18tj birthday has asked if his aunties and uncles will fund a commuting bicycle. Being a old bike mechanic I was up for simply restoring his old Trek mountain bike. As it was a £500 bike in its day with some Deore LX components. However this has not met his expectations... :(

So with a budget of £250 can anyone help me find a bargain basement street bicycle to get him around the city. Anyone got discount codes / sale recommendations where I can make £250 budget stretch to something other than a shed?

Also I'm open to anyone selling a decent condition bike second hand if you have one going spare?

Cheers
James

I have an old Norco bushpilot in the garage which I never really used and when I did it was road use only. It's reasonably clean, but dusty which I would let go for nothing and would leave plenty for upgrades.

To be honest I'm not clued up on bikes and at the time I bought it,I thought I could get into the whole thing and really at the time didn't really interest me hence why it wasn't really used.

I have a Spesh Tricross surplus to requirements, think it's a 2010 model, size 56. I used it for commuting for three years. You're welcome to have a look.

Mango bikes seem to be good value and, I'd guess, popular with the yoof

Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

My brother has a mango single speed and it seems decent enough. Gumtree and ebay would be a good place to look if you know what size of bike you are looking for. I've bought my last two bikes from gumtree, the first had been on a spin round the block, never used again and was like new.

I'm not sure if there is something like this near you? A friend got a bike for £70.

I've got one of these that I keep chained up in London and use when I am down every couple of weeks - been a great steed and its fast, and ideal for city centre riding. I am sure I only paid £250ish for mine from Chain Reaction but it was a couple of years ago.

Just checked and mine is actually a 29er better spec one of these (disc brakes) - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/vitu ... -prod80999

Cracking bike and looks great, regardless of cost. Love riding it about town as its quick off the mark and London is flat

Okay a decision has been made after much consultation with my nephew. He's going new... Mango Single Speed Fresher :thumbsup

https://www.mangobikes.com/shop/bikes/o ... d-fresher/

I personally tried to push him to the Vitus bikes mentioned by JJ, but it dint stick. So good luck to him fixing punctures and trying to cycle up steep hills on his uber cool Mango :damnfunny

Many thanks for all the input as the Vitus bikes would have ticked the box I think personally
