Audi R8 V10 thoughts????

Post by renmure » Mon Dec 19, 2016 1:13 pm

Just a tentative inquiry at the moment, but I know there are some folk with a bit of knowledge about them on SE.

Any hints, tips, pointers, pitfalls or general stuff that would be good to know? Running costs, service costs, must-have options, things to avoid?

Since selling the Vantage, I sort of miss having something that is nice and special on the road but also useable and not too much of an "all about the car" event all the time..... and Wendy likes them

I think budget wise I would be looking at a V10 at about £55/65k so a 2009/10/11 car. Preference is for manual I think and, unless I can get one in Iron Man colours, then I prefer red or blue.

All just general head-in-the-clouds type wonderings for now but if anyone has anything to throw in it would be appreciated.

I know an owner of an orange 2-11 (which I still haven't seen in the composite) with a rather lovely manual V10. Miltek pipes - it sounds fantastic.

I don't think he's a member on here, but you'll get him via Twitter @ScottAFerguson .

Watching this with interest for someone as they are thinking along the same lines.

He has limited his scope to manual as its supposed to be a great gearbox. And apparently (third hand without any actual objective evidence) unless you get the later ones (don't know what year sorry) then the auto isn't as good. Totally helpful post that one eh!

my 2d's..

love the look and style..

Borrowed one for a weekend - HATED IT WITH A PASSION!

Positives:

The engine - sounds glorious, pulls like a train etc etc.

Negatives:

Brakes - zero feel, really hard to get on with, they seem to be either on or off, particularly bad at low speeds
Gearbox (manual) - Truly horrible, THE worst manual box I have encountered for years, zero precision, zero confidence if your actually in gear or not.
cabin - less space than an Elise, with even worse viability, Seating position is not great and the pedal layout not great either (looks like it was designed for two pedals, not 3)
Steering - zero feel, give no confidence what's going on etc. on a track, you might be able to explore the limits, on the road, you have no idea.

I really wanted to like it, came away thinking the S5 (I had at the time) made a better sportscar!

Pretty sure that Mike loves his, and he has had a few cars to compare it to.

Scuffers you must have borrowed a pup.

Gearbox is epic on mine, is superb in bad weather - actually thats when its at its best. (i know Pete Bennet had an issue with his gearbox though)

Handling is pretty spot on, I've the Spyder which isn't as hard as the V8 Coupe I had before it. Easy every day car, bit of a thirst, but sounds epic with the roof down and foot to the boards.

Only thing id say is that you've no idea how good it sounds in the coupe - roof down its glorious, as the Lambo sourced V10 is epic.

Took it down to see Mass in the borders last weekend, and it was properly impressive covering slippy roads - as i say perhaps a touch unexciting in the dry.

Build quality has been pretty sound generally.

Bought mine post back operation in the hope that I could make frolic that year, but it never happened. Essentially a slightly better Gallardo with lower running costs and less attention from pikees.

Been thinking along the lines of an R8 V8 recently, partly prompted by a used feature in Evo. Buy a good low miler and I reckon depreciation would be minimal. Seems an interesting alternative to a similarly priced Exige V6. The problem I have always had with the R8 though is the looks, especially side on it looks wrong to my eyes. I remember seeing one next to a Ferrari in one of those airport win a supercar displays and it looked pretty dumpy and ordinary in comparison. Then again, relatively understated looks will be part of the appeal to some I guess.

I am sure I could get over the looks for the noise the V10 makes though :)

Just had a read through of my original initial review of the car and I have to say not much has changed. Still haven't had to change the brake pads yet however at the last service the mechanic did comment that it was the first one he had seen that had worn pads and that they will need changed at the next service.
Points to be aware of are few, she hasn't put a foot wrong other than a broken ashtray cover. Stone chips are the biggest issue with mine, seems like it picks them up very easily. Servicing costs £1200, will let you know about the 3year as it's due. You can save a fortune by suppling your own oil. Audi charge £75 ltr for Mobil 1 and the car uses 8-10ltr at service so if you buy it from Opie for about £120 the service costs £520. Pollen filter is £280 but you don't need that every time.
Still love the car, probably not the sharpest handling but certainly good enough. The engine and gearbox, mine is S-tronic, are brilliant. Thing pulls like a train and will very quickly hit three figures if your not watching. It's reasonably practical, you can get more in the front boot than you would think.
All in all it's been a very good car to own. Proof of the pudding is in that fact I have kept her for 3 years and she now needs an MOT.
i keep threatening to sell it as we are doing up our house and really don't have the time or funds to use it like it should be. But then I take it out for a wee blast and that idea gets pout on the back burner :)

The R8V10 sounds great, but it just looks, well, like a new TT to me on the road. Spending that sort of money (both on the car and running it) I'd want something that looked a bit more special. We're all different though. Thank god.

I do agree with the looks, maybe not a eye popping as a McLaren or Ferrari but it doesn't come with the price tag or the running cost of either of those. I would agree with you if the budget for a supercar was £200k but my V10 plus was £80k cheaper. Even the new McLaren sport series, which were supposed to fall into the same price bracket, start where the R8 finishes price wise. So unless you move to another whole new price range there really isn't much competition.

I would love to like the looks of the new McLaren sport series but I don't. To be fair, I tend to be a bit of a late adopter of things so maybe over time they will grow on me. As someone who usually prefers vents and wings and scoops I wasn't overly enthralled with the looks of the R8 at first either but I am getting there. :D
