I was a bit the same at the beginning with the R8 TBH Jim. It is vey understated, maybe too understated given that it is a full bore supercar. That being said it has be a joy to own and use. It's as versatile as my 911 was but so much more. Even with the Plus's fixed dampeners it's supple enough on back roads. The cabin is a lovely place to be, very comfortable and enough toys to keep you entertained. The audio inn mine is B&O upgrade and I don't mind that the head unit doesn't do all the things new ones do. We did a run from Portsmouth to Aberdeen after GFOS and could quite easily jumped back in the car and driven back straight away. It's good fun on back roads even if it's a little wide for some of them.

And with all respect c8rkh, if you mistake an R8 for a TT the maybe you should book an appointment here

Lol - nothing wrong with my eyes and in my rear view mirror they look the same. But I am biased and do not in general like Ooodi's of any description. But I am open and honest about that and admit my bias freely.

The R8 was the only car that was making me think I could get away with a 2 seater again but head won and as I wanted to take the boys out with me.

Now that Christmas has come and gone, I have gone off the boil on the R8 for now and might look again at it in spring.

Haha, yeah. I think I noticed that :)
Very nice it is as well.

I did mention earlier I was a slow adopter and I guess the Evora is growing on me. But not quite yet :D

Dunno. 1st world problems and all that. Needs to be something that will feel and look quite special and still be a sort of sensible thing to buy and not depreciate like a stone or cost a bomb in ownership costs even if it's not getting used much... and be different enough from the 360 Spider and Ultima to make me want to drive it on special days and also be a bit more special than the MX5. Would be helpful if Wendy liked it as well :D

All the really sensible reasons I swapped the Vantage for the Boxster Spyder are still valid (it cost me £400 for a big Main Dealer service last month and that's it for another 2 years with the bonus that they are going up in value) but it's more hassle than the Mazda, less special than the Ferrari, I have driven it 4 times this year and I *think* something like a V10 R8 would fill the space in the garage better. Maybe.

Like I say, it's a 1st world problem. Maybe the answer is a Golf :blackeye

Hm. I'm biased. But an Evora ticks a few of your boxes there.

What about a Maclaren?

You will make a car salesman yet :blackeye

Genuinely not sold on the looks of McLarens (so far) but even so, the cheapest would be an extra £40/45k over my budget which is a lot to spend on a spare spare and that's before the ownership costs come in. I think they would make a great "special car" tho and the 12c probably even fits into the almost-sensible realms of man-math.

Funnily enough, I do always end up looking at Lotuses, but S3 Turbo Esprits, which is probably as far removed from a sensible R8 as you can get

If you can find one without the horrible headlights - 4C?

Seen 1 on the road so far so it's certainly 'special' ;)

Sorry to hear you are not getting on with the Spyder, presume its the roof that is causing the problems and your recent experience on the service.

Couple of suggestions:
Lamborghini Hurracan (R8 in different body but substantially more expensive servicing)
Jaguar F-Type R (may not be special enough and likely to depreciate) http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/ ... wd/6635326
Maserati Grandsport/Grandtourismo/Grandsport Cabrio http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/ ... le/6521049

Nooooo.. nothing to do with the car whatever. It is fab. As for the roof, I've only needed to put it up once and didn't bother with the back bit and that was also all good. All the reasons for wanting one are as valid as they were before I got it and it is the most sensible spare car you could have. The service / test drive fiasco just confirmed how different the Spyder is from the new 4 cylinder cars and reaffirmed how special they are and why they are creeping up in value.

I am too poor to have a Lamborghini and a Ferrari, too young for a Jaguar and too sensible for a Maserati

Off to look at Evoras :blackeye

I'd have the Maser over the R8 any day, but hope you end up in a nice lovely Evora. Crackin' good cars they are... ;)
