West Coast Weekend

Post by Danny T30TUS » Sun Mar 26, 2017 5:47 pm

Hey folks,

Planning a surprise trip for the missus in May and looking for some suggestions.

We both enjoy jumping in the car and heading too a nice quiet hotel in places like Braemar, Ballater, and Aviemore. Trouble is we've done all these places over and over and now fancy something different.

I'm thinking West coast, somewhere where I can park the car safely and enjoy a Friday evening then have something to do locally on the Saturday (distillery would be ideal) we would then head home on the Sunday.

All suggestions welcome but must include some nice food / drink venues.

Thanks

Danny

Danny,

Drive to Spean Bridge via Aviemore on the Friday and stay here http://www.smiddyhouse.com as the food is delicious. On Saturday you could drive via Glen Shiel and head for Skye and the Talisker distillery. https://www.malts.com/en-gb/our-whisky- ... /talisker/ On Sunday head home via Achnasheen and Grantown Upon Spey for some great driving on quiet roads.

Smee is your man regarding distillery tours but a quick Google comes up with this http://chilledmagazine.com/the-12-best- ... n-scotland

Our default getaway is the Ceilidh Place in Ullapool. http://www.theceilidhplace.com/ Very cosy and friendly place; relaxed and informal. There's usually free live music (or just locals having a jam) in one of the bars in town at weekends, or more organised gigs in summer months: http://www.theceilidhplace.com/whats-on/

No shortage of whisky in either the Ceilidh Place bar or the Seaforth round the corner.

Fantastic drive to get there too. Glen Ord distillery is on the way. You could come home by heading north out of Ullapool, then right at Ledmore junction and back via Balblair and/or Glenmorangie.

No worries parking at the hotel; they're used to silly cars and bikes touring through. If you're worried, ask if you can pop it round the back out of sight. There were a handful of Caterhams round there last time I was up.

Saturday you could pop up to the beaches at Achmelvich for a walk, or take a boat trip round the isles, or stop off for a walk at Corrieshalloch Gorge falls, or take a 45min drive round (more brilliant roads) to Poolewe gardens and have lunch at Gairloch (nice wee cafe there called The Steading)... The world is your oxter!

I was surprised how lively Ullapool was on Saturday, lots of shops and restaurants and a nice friendly atmosphere. Of course, the roads and scenery were incredible. I went to the ledmore junction and headed back east, the road is narrow but I hardly saw a soul, eventually arrived at Bonar bridge and to be honest, I should have just turned around and gone all the way back, that side of the north of Scotland was rubbish right down to Inverness.
