Armchair Euro Road Trip Planning Update

Post by H8OAG » Wed May 24, 2017 3:02 pm

Three cars now confirmed to head off on a "Monaco or Bust" trip in late September as part of my Sixtieth celebrations.

We are heading down to tunnel to Monaco with three overnight pitstops so far....

Bethune

Reims

Annecy

Then follows three nights at the Fairmont in Monaco
(Coincides with a major Boat Show for Russian Oligarchs and Bond Villains)

We intend to move across to Lake Como to have two nights there.......then head home via (as yet) an undetermined route

Suggestions are required for the following:-

* Lake Como accommodation (parking and 6 people)

* Route home ...again over three nights......and any tried and tested accommodations

Como - http://www.villadeste.com/en/13/home.aspx

:P

If sir prefers a less ostentatious abode, I can recommend Albergo Trattoria La Vignetta, which is just up the hill - Website seems to be down, but it's this place: https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... bardy.html

We stayed there for five days three years ago, and rated it - Nice restaurant, friendly staff (family run) - A little quaint, but very Italian. Decent car park at the side. 5 minute walk into Cernobbio (restuarants / shops / bars etc). Tenner in a taxi or catch the ferry to Como town.

Annecy is lovely - We stopped there on the way back up from Como (the 4 hour queue for the Mont Blanc tunnel was not so lovely, but never mind).

As regards route back - We were on the Geordie Express, so little help there, I'm afraid - We did go Annecy -> Adenau for steak on a stone at the Pistenklause -> Ijmuiden, but that's a bit of a detour :P

:cheers

Como a definite? Not Garda? I ask as the drive between the two picks up Milan traffic. Was in Garda last year and can suggest a farm place in the hills that sounds suitable. Next month going to Como for the annual family euro road trip and will keep an eye out.

Swissland don't like fast cars.

Iain, Ze Swiss don't tolerate exuberant driving of ANY sort. So other than to take in the (truly stunning) scenery or cut a more direct path from A to B, simply avoid.

Swiss Pete Bennett is your source of intel here.

Iain,

Its a little bit outside the lakes but I have used Case Clelia in Bergamo on a number of occasions for Monza, Lakes etc:
http://www.casaclelia.com/index_eng.php

They have ample parking and my mates GT4 was able to get into the car park so the Elise should not be an issue. Downside is that its a little bit away from the lakes so designated drivers would have to be employed however some of the back roads are pretty decent.

However if you want more lake side then I would recommend sawdays:

Used them on a number of occasions and never got a bad hotel/b&B or villa in my experience.

Our road trip next month follows a similar route:

1 night in Picardy
2 nights in Burgundy (gite on a vinyard)
1 night in Geneva (via Annency, agreed)
4 nights Lake Como
7 nights Switzerland (near Interlaken)
1 night Eiffel mountains (not the Ring)

At Lake Como - our lovely hotel of last year, Hotel Orso Bruno in Carate Urio (great, quiet, lakeside, 500 yards from Clooney's villa) is very much recommended...Samuele could sort you with a deal for that late in the season......
