Why do I own this?

Post by pete » Thu Jan 04, 2018 11:06 pm

In my garage there are currently 16 bicycles, a work bench and an Exige.

The Exige does not move.

It's too small for me, it's in too good a condition for me, I feel bad getting it wet, it's too fast for the road and I'm too busy to get to a track. Craig promised me it was a good price though so hopefully I've not lost too much owning a car I just insure....

We went to Ardnamurchan at New Year to see some friends but Mrs Pete couldn't come (she was working) so it was going to be just me and Mil (13)....

"Shall we take the Exige?" she wasks.

"Och," I reply - 20 years in Scotland having taken their toll, "can we really be àrsed?"

"Yeah!! - it's all about the look!"

So I think about packing it. And think how much stuff we have to take for 2 nights in a house. We used to go camping in this car's predecessor, Suzy and I. Graeme (Britain's tallest man, 2002-2004) once went round Europe for months in his with his girlfriend. At least I think she was his girlfriend, I never checked. So impressed was I by his fleeting tale of packing prowess that I can still remember it years later, although I can't remember the name of Belle and Sebastian's first album. Even though I have spent far more time with the record than I have with Graeme.
No, screw you middle age, I can do this.

But what if it snows, I've been trolling the EV drivers for months as they all buy winter fùcking tyres for their cars despite living in Surrey. And I mock them.
But the Highlands in winter on Avon ZZRs might be stupid - I might crash and kill my daughter. And that would make Suzy really angry. And if I damage the Exige Craig might get angry too.
So I worry and I pack and re-pack and then we leave anyway

As we pass the airport in Glasgow (Scotland's premie airport) the M8 look like a scene from a disaster movie, there's bits of cars and whole cars littering the carriageway and we weave between them like Cillian Murphy in "28 days Later". Got a bit sketchy going through a massive flood approaching Erskine when I thought I was going to crash but otherwise it was fine. Did lots of overtaking without ever going onto 2nd cam except for the one time when I got a bit scared.

I have no idea how much fuel it uses.

It snowed on the way home. It was quite scary. I didn't take any photos but in my bathroom is a picture from teh 2014 SE calendar of an Exige in the snow.
It seems unlikely they crashed just after taking it, so it'll probably be fine I think.

It was fine.

I really overthink things.

I was looking at the same picture just before Christmas a thought "what the hell" made you got up the Lecht in that snow.

They are fine in the snow as long it doesn't reach the floor :D

It’s easy to worry about not using them, but important not to let a golden opportunity like that pass. Good on you. Great car too, must be a monster in the wet. 👍

"n my garage there are currently 16 bicycles, a work bench and an Exile."

Crikey I thought I was bad with 6 bicycles. You obviously follow the theory of N + 1 when it comes to bikes :D
