Nice walks in central Scotland

Post by mckeann » Sat Jan 06, 2018 11:38 am

Anybody got any suggestions for nice walks in central Scotland or within 30-45 mins drive of Bo'ness.

Since losing our dog in October, the missus and I have struggled to find a good reason to get out the house and instead of walking 6 miles a day (was 10+ in the old days when he was younger) we're sat about the house getting fat.

Would like to get into a bit of hill walking maybe, but don't have any gear or maps or anything and don't want to end up on the BBC news looking like an idiot, so I'd like to start slow and low. Doesn't even need to be a hill, just somewhere different that I'm not going to bump into all my old dog walker comrades asking where the dog is.

The ViewRanger app is quite good. You can search for routes in your chosen area and download relevant OS map segments. You can then use GPS when out walking to follow the route.

Great website with route maps and descriptions etc.
Has coastal walks as well as Munro’s.

The ochils are close and have a few options for hills from easy to longer. I did the Ben Cleuch wonder a few years ago.

Some fine routes from your house, Neil. Up to Grange, round Linlithgow Loch and back.

Over Fishers Brae, past Glenavon House to Glenavon quarry, back over to Kinneil.

Shore route to Hopetoun House. Detour to Mannerstons for pitstop

Further afield. Loads from David Marshall Lodge, Aberfoyle. More just west of Aberfoyle at Loch Ard.

Pentland Hills have loads of routes.

Ben Ledi.

Tinto.

Conic Hill.

Dumyat.

Castle Campbell & Dollar Glen.

Vane Farm near Kinross.

Like D says, Walkhighlands is excellent.

Can post a few maps of the most local ones if you like.

Dumyat hill in Stirling, get up way higher than the Wallace monument for some great views. Still some snow up at the top.

Dumyat is a good'n with epic views and not too challenging. Also some nice tracks around Brig o' Turk in the Trossachs.

Would you not consider getting another dog?

Probably a bit far out for you but I have always like the walk up Dumgoyne. Park at the distillery and an easy 90 mins up and down with some great views of Loch Lomond, Trossachs and the greatest city in the world.
