I keep wondering whether something mid sporty saloon wise and a tow bar and trailer for the van related stuff might get be the way forward.

Evora - IF you all fit in.
As per our discussions, there's a Jag for every budget ( although some might not be too different to your current Merc in how they feel).
Left field choice - Infinitii FX or QX 70.

Old boy has a Jag XE, 2.5T R sport about 260 HP I think. Must admit it’s very nice, it’s quick, handles beautifully and it’s a nice place to be. The supercharged v6 would be very tempting as a dynamically more engaging alternative to a BM 335/340/435/440. It consider one. Ironically the only reason I’d consider one is cause I’ve driven the old boys and the reason I’d rul it out is cause the old boy drives one. He’s cool tho he’s had it on track!

My first thought was Golf R estate but may not fit the ‘special’ brief.

Brilliant all-rounder according to all reports though.

My worry if you go down the Volvo shed route would be that you have two ‘silly’ cars and you end up spending lots of time in a shed worth a fraction of either of them.

Have you thought about an Alpina D3 estate? Very rare and maybe still out of budget (still north of £40k) but does special and all-rounder very well.

V70 and Evora for me. Or if V70 a bit leggy and fuelly what about one of those car derived vans, Citroen Berlingo etc. take the rear seats out and thats you got your builders DIY van .

Just been given a 330d wagon as a loaner. Prob too much poke for family duties (the 220 e class wagon is ample for that) but you wanted some fun. Problem is it feels pretty numb, leccy steering, and its teeny inside. Too used to acres of space in e-classes although I think there was a 3 series estate in the fleet at some point.

Looking myself right now, that said you never stop looking do you.

M6 could be a good shout but seemingly they're getting silly money these days. How about a TTRS? JonnyMito seems to like his and has a cavernous boot as well as a lovely soundtrack from the 5 pot engine. Doesn't take much to get it around 400bhp
