My Evo seems to be shrinking

Post by Dominic » Mon Jan 08, 2018 10:20 pm

Anyone else notice that Evo magazine is getting smaller?

Also, one of the highlights, the car of the year feature seemed like a bit of a feeble effort this year, just a list of individual road tests. I guess their budgets are tightening as the printed media is suffering against on line competition.

I've been meaning to cancel my subscription for about a year as I pretty much lost interest in it and also never have time to just chill and read these days. I've got a pile of around a dozen still in their wrapper; only time I read it is the odd time I'm going on a flight an download a copy onto my ipad. I'm not sure if there is an ipad only subscription available? - Must check that out.

I pretty much gave up,on car magazines a couple or years ago as they might as well have been brochures for Porsche and/or BMW. I did try a free trial of an on- line magazine app and they seemed to have improved but not enough to make me subscribe when the trial finished.

I got bored with it when it went all Supercary years ago.

Modern Classics is my monthly car mag these days.

I get EVO online. Forget to read it half the time. Need to set a reminder!

Cancelled my subscription a couple of years ago as I never had time to sit down and read it.

They kept sending me it until a few months ago.

Even when it was free I couldn’t find the time to read it!

Not noticed it getting smaller but do agree that the car of the year wasn't nearly such a good event (if that makes sense) this year.
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

Got a few still to catch up on due to lack of reading time recently - noticed the media they are printing on has changed to a different grade - could that be why it feels smaller - or are there less pages? I've just started reading January.

Always found it odd though how the one that comes through the post is for about three months ahead! A month or two fair enough - but three?!?!

Agree re ECOTY - not as big a deal made of it this year and normally quite like that.

I cancelled my subscription in Dec, it doesn't hold my interest like the old days.
Social media and the constant stream of information has ruined the anticipation & excitement of EVO dropping through the door! :(

Yeah, they changed the paper and format etc 3 or 4 issues ago. You'll see the new ones are actually physically a little bit smaller.
Laying a new one on top of old it's quite obvious. Similar quality content though, although I agree that ECoTY a bit of a non event compared to previous years.

I bought the current (or last months?) Modern Classics, the one with the Maserati GranSport in the group test, which belongs to a fellow Maserati forum owner. It was a good read, but I was through it in about 3 hours. What was nice was that I bought it online, delivered to my door, and I think it cost the same as the cover price too. I suspect I'll continue to cherry pick magazines now and again based on individual issue recommendations or interests.

Ok, ignore all my previous comments, EVO is clearly wonderful and well written by true experts:

And finally, what's your favorite car launched in the last 20 years?
Any number of 911s (including a Singer) commend themselves, as does the Ferrari 458 Speciale. However, I think an S1 Elise Sport 135 is my pick.
