"The surveys also revealed that only one in every 5,000 vehicles was now driving at more than 10mph over the limit."

Does this mean 80mph is when you will get a ticket ?

I always set my cruise control to 78 (not in the lotus!)

What was the urban myth threshold for most limits... +10% ?

Doubt they'll be set less than 78 GPS. Ticket processing would have been a constraint in the past but surely that's automated now?

Given how few people anyone has ever heard of being 'done' by these standard yellow average speed cameras makes me wonder how many of them, if any are not just empty yellow boxes??

If indeed the 'cameras' are mostly just empty lookalike boxes then the authorities must quite rightly be congratulating themselves on the cost effectiveness of them for dissuading people from speeding over long distances across the country.

This morning's run up there were two cam vans on the northbound carriageway, so the mystery continues.....if the average speed cameras are operational, why bother with vans? :blackeye

I err on the side of caution and assume they will be set lower than 78 average. My reasoning, and I have no evidence for this whatsoever, is that it's a lot harder to justify "accidentally" doing a sustained (average) 78 over specs distance, than an instantaneous 78 at a gatso or scam van.

Fair strategy G.

If Scam Vans are out on Av Spd Cam sections then if bet the Avs are not live. Yet.

Or takings are just down...

My only other reasoning behind this is there are still fools who brake for the specs cameras, the accelerate after, so the vans would catch those nuggets.

Imagine a one way trip being done for both :damnfunny

There are places to join between cameras so there’s still the option of vmax until you hit the first one. Scam vans could be out for this reason but I doubt it would be worth their while.

This, and I had instances this afternoon coming home where speed down to say 55 tuts whilst a slower moving vehicle was overtaking, so my ave speed app allowed me to travel at (cough) tuts whilst my ave speed crept back up to the magical 70 :blackeye

What app do you use? I would like to be able to easily reset it between each camera (just for my awareness, obviously)

DigiHUD

Mentioned earlier, and some of its features (like heads up display hence its name)

Tut had pointed out that it's Android only, I wasn't aware.

I read somewhere (so may be BS) that average speed cameras may not operate in a purely serial manner - as in, they may measure your speed between alternating cameras, so it may not just be your speed between cameras 1 to 2, it may be between camera's 1 - 4 or 2 - 5 etc. As I said, that may be carp..

I think they are all wired up and connected, as frquent trips down to Dundee during the course of the year saw them being fitted in place of existing cameras, or close a an existing electrical supply like a lampost, with trenches dug for the cabling.

However, heading north out of Dundee, the first camera is literally a few seconds drive beyond the last roundabout, and few cars could reach 70mph in that short distance. Some of the pairing are easy enough to work out, like the 50mph ones at Lawrencekirk (I know of one person who was done by these with cruise set to 71), but I've not yet counted to see if there's an even or odd number in each direction that might indicate one or more are dummies.
