What Car to Get #3

Post by DDtB » Tue Feb 27, 2018 3:27 pm

Hi Folks..

In need of some inspiration and given it's been a week since we last had a What Car to Get thread, thought it must be time for another!!

Current fleet includes a shed spec Volvo XC-70 and Mrs DDtB-to-be's Audi A3.

The A3 is only really used to take her to the nail bar every few weeks so time for it to move on. The issue being she isn't as excited by an old XC-70 shed as I am. So think we'll move that on as well.

That means I need a car that can do 3 days a week sitting on the M8 in rush hour hell whilst also being nice enough that she won't have to put a brown paper bag on her head to be seen in.

So the requirements so far are:
something 'decent' that I won't hate using at weekends if for some reason I can't take the Evora
Commute friendly for 10-12k miles per year - so Auto/DSG type box, heated seats, maybe adaptive cruise etc etc.
35+ mpg
no RWD only. Preferably 4x4

Have been mulling over a facelifted 335d Touring for around the 20-25k mark, but given the kicking diesels are getting and the fact the new 3 series is coming out later this year probably... it may not be the most sensible choice. Also not sure how great the economy will end up being in stop/start M8 traffic.

A petrol hybrid would be tremendous I think, so I could use the electric aspect in the worst M8 bits and still have a decent petrol engine to enjoy at weekends or when the M8 occasionally clears up. Choice seems very limited though so that's maybe the option next time we change.

The other option is to say fck it and just buy the car she actually wants... which is a Range Rover Sport. But that's more like 45k+ still which would invariably mean PCP or similar. urgh.

So... opening the floor for any ideas?!?

Cheers!

Dave.

p.s. If anyone is looking for a 1.6 Petrol A3 or a super awesome XC-70 shed this year... you know where to look

Range Rover Velar, seen one today, look stunning in the metal. Will probably break a lot tho.

Just got an XC60 and am loving it. Pop over if you want a shot in it.

An Evoque?!? did you miss the bit where I said I like the ladies not the laddies?

Did consider them, but too much form over function and don't really like any of the engines in them. Similar on the Discovery Sport.. don't like it at all. RRS or Full Fat RR are the only ones we both like from that stable tbh.

Cheers though!

Velar is too pricey and too new to get any decent deal on. In the ideal world it'll be something about 3 years old that's already lost the big depreciation they all do in that period.

I really like the last gen XC60 as a car and it's in budget but it's just a bit too 'family' for us. Want something a bit 'cooler'.

Loving the new XC60 and XC90, especially in T8 form, but too pricey as well. Specced an XC60 up at £66k this morning!

Velar looks cool in photos. Have spotted a few around now. Something didn't translate to the real work. They look pretty awful. Still think the 335d x drive is a decent bet Dave.

Have you considered an i3 rex? Not everyone taste and RWD only, but I was smitten after driving another SErs non rex i3.

Subaru levorg...? I know a guy who loves his.

A3 quattro saloon in dsg?

New volvo v40?

Considered the i3 but more a city car than an M8 commuter for me. i8 is a bit too far the other way too. Need an i5

Didn't realise they'd actually sold any Levorgs!? Someone bought one!?!

Quite like the A3 sportback in S3 guise but the issue there is the new one is sooo much better than the used ones. Seems like they update the Audis every 6 months!! So I know I'd be suckered in to buying one with the virtual dash etc.

Love the new Volvo range but again it's the new car issue vs 3 year old one for depreciation. May need to pop to a volvo dealer though and see if she can get past the badge

FFRR. Might as well go into marriage with brownie points.

I can see the logic there. Concern is how long will it take to spend those points when she finds out how much they actually cost to run vs. what I told her using Davienomics

640d sexdrive

EDIT: Never mind, just learned that the xDrive is LHD only. Stupid BMW.

What about a nice C4S? Or a 996 if you can't find a nice one?

New XC40. Quite cool indeed

Jag E-Pace looks good too

If there's a deal to be had on the XC70 Shed I'm keen 😎

There’s not a huge amount of interesting cars to choose from. XC40?

Or I can sell you a cheap RRS.
