Nonsense yourself, Ross. Or was that tongue in cheek? :)

By all means have an appreciating car or two in the garage, but that doesn't solve the problem of most households needing two practical mile-munchers as well. You still have a real-world car problem to solve, no matter how lucky you get with the collectables.
You clearly don't know me too well Graeme :blackeye

Of course, mainstream daily will be something which depreciates. Tis life.

My current household is an extremely oddball set up, partly down to two teenagers and the need for lowering hefty insurance premiums as much as is possible, and a wife's motor which I'm temporarily sharing.

All three of those are dropping, albeit not at a worrying rate. The remaining car is appreciating slowly but not at sufficient a rate to cover the maintenance costs (yet).

Heres my input - leasing / contract hire etc
My sister inlaw spends £2000 upfront & £350 a month for a new car every 3 years
Thats £14,500 spent every 3 yrs and then back to square one
What I do is get a bank loan - for arguments sake, say £14,500
I buy something nice thats 3yrs old - like a BMW 330d for eg
After 3 yrs, you will have lost about £4 to 5k on it
And you have £8-9k capital
Ok, servicing / repairs / tyres
Still better off imho

I remember my father drumming into me that the only way to buy a car was at 2 or 3 years old, let someone else take the hit on the depreciation. Once upon a time that was pure gold. Still instances where that is very much the case but increasingly it's very much not the case. Best to approach with an open mind rather than pre judge.
And my old man used to lease all his cars, a new one every 3 years was great!

The problem I have with leasing is that I want two nice cars but I'm too poor to pay two monthly payments.

So the only way to work it is to finance car #1, then once that is paid off, keep it while I finance a new car #2.
Once that is paid off I can keep #2 and replace #1 and so on....

You're right though, keeping an open mind is definitely needed as finance deals change etc.
At one point I never would have considered a PCP, now some of the deals look tempting.

I'm a bit too old fashioned to be into finance but when I was with the salesman recently buying my Honda the Dealership was quiet due to the snow so I let him go through the various options for a 3 year plan thing. It already came with a 3 year warranty and 5 years free servicing so I guess there are no hidden extras.

Putting aside depreciation (since you pay for that eventually, either in monthly payments or when you sell and change car) the "man-maths" of buying over 3 years on a Honda plan thingy worked out at an additional cost to buy the car of around £2.85 / day.

Ok, man-maths is dangerous and there are a lot of days in 3 years, but I could almost see a bit of the attraction. I was polite enough to go for a coffee (Starbucks large Latte, £2.90) to think it over. In the end it wasn't for me but there was a bit of a wobble.

Bit of a laugh in my case that I buy an Elise four years ago, then sell it for a £2K profit without checking what it was really valued at.

However it was worth it for a hassle free unseen sale to a fellow Eliser.

Elan Sprint had no depreciation, but was £1/mile all up.

Who cares - only money and you can’t take it with you.

Dave's other half's car is for sale in Classifieds. Does this mean we have a winner?

Getting closer!...

Figured we should just punt hers now given it only moves once every 2 weeks to go to the nail bar just now..

When the Volvo appears in the classifieds..that's the real sign! Although there seems to be a good bit of interest in that already. Gonna miss my Volvo :(

RRS and S4 are now pretty much ruled out.

Back to looking for a 335d again. Just can't ignore how good an all rounder it appears to be for practicality, performance and economy combined.

Makes it easier to justify keeping the Evora too, compared to an S4 etc.
