NLC Electrical Question
NLC Electrical Question
Hoping there are some electrical experts here. An electrical item is rated at 120V/60Hz, USA manufactured. It includes a CRT oscilloscope and analogue gauges, all 1970's technology. Using a step down transformer I can provide a 110V/50Hz input. Will this have a detrimental effect on the operation of the unit ?. In particular is the AC frequency an important factor ?. It's an old Sun analyser, completely overhauled and recalibrated in the US at 60Hz input. Even if it runs at 50Hz will it read incorrectly as a result ?.

Thanks Campbell
Re: NLC Electrical Question
This just in, from another well-known Robin
"It's highly unlikely that it will rely on mains frequency for timing. So I think he will be fine provided transformer is big enough to handle the power required by the equipment"

Re: NLC Electrical Question
Thanks. I'm happy enough with the power requirement for the transformer, although most common ones are 110v not 120 but can provide sufficient amps. My main concern is the oscilloscope. When Robin refers to the timing, is he referring to the timing strobe ?. I know that has nothing to do with the AC supply frequency, it's the analogue gauges I'm concerned about, are these powered by AC or DC ?. If DC then it's not an issue. I'll keep digging.

No idea. Just the Messenger.
May be able to connect you both if you are desperate. Drop me a PM with an email addy or mobile.
Good luck !!
