K series rebuild

Post by Stephen » Wed Jul 11, 2018 6:56 pm

Hi,
Looking for indications as to what an engine out, rebuild and re install should cost. The cost suggested by my garage seems steep but wanting a sense check before I push back in case it's just me being tight.

Thanks

Depends what you mean by rebuild and what you find once you open up the engine. If everything is OK and just needs refreshed then your looking at a full set of gaskets, set of mains and big end bearings, oil, coolant, head bolts, timing belt and at the very least a new water pump ( be mad not to change it given the belt is off).
The flip side is all of the above plus a replacement crank, cams, liners, pistons and rings which can vary in price greatly depending where you get them not to mention cylinder head porosity which is a common issue for K series engines.

For the former I would expect a garage to charge around £800 - 1000, for there later just open your wallet and let the money fly out, better off sourcing a second hand engine.

How much did they quote you out of interest?

The engine hydraliced and needed a new piston and con rod and liner. Other than that the job has been rear clam off, engine out, rebuild with new gaskets etc
I haven't upgraded anything.
Currently asking for £3000 but the car is not back on the road yet.

£3k is steep, but a clam can take an age to remove if they run into issues with bolts etc and by no means straight forward if you have never done it before. Probably looking at about £200 in extra parts to what I listed above but still seems expensive for sure.

Mines just been refreshed and I was £600 in bits alone but I saved money on labour as my mechanic needed help with a house extension and we just did hour for hour. I did replace the clutch with a new ap one, I added a sump baffle , stronger oil rail, competition head gasket and stronger head bolts while I was at it, amongst other things. The engine was dropped from underneath and removing the clam wasn’t nessesary.

I reckoned I would of been close to 2k without the exchange of working hours, but this has a bit to do with Aberdeen’s inflated prices.

My engine had been rebuilt before according to the mechanic and was relatively clean and was let down to the liners being seated down with the wrong sealant.

If you do rebuild least you know you have a reliable engine.
