Silverstone Classic Festival

Post by H8OAG » Fri Jul 20, 2018 8:49 am

Here with Faither in his mobile caravan thingy until Sunday

Sitting in the campsite surrounded by classic cars.....looking up at hot air balloons.

Auction last night

Usual self flagellation over car values on cars we once owned....although the bubble appears to be burst......with cars not reaching reserve

Race qualifying starts today

Yesterday’s journey was marred by the site of a Lotus Elite fully ablaze at the roadside
(The adjacent tree was also ablaze)

:cheers

Wanted to take James, looks awesome. Costs prohibitive and bit of work to squeeze in before Monday, so abandoned this week.

I'm sure you two will have a blast, enjoy

Sounds good.

I asked elsewhere but what is the opinion of a good combined motorsport / social event at value for money ? Fancy seeing an event or two over next few years preferably with a group. Which was based on Ian mentioning he was doing Silverstone Classic

Answer I got was Goodwood Revival although nobody answered about Le Mans, Le Man classic.

Asked this

Would like to start thinking about going to events combining motorsport and the social side of a group of people wandering about enjoy cars and cars related stuff over more than a day hopefully with a beer or 2 and probably driving to the event. Having watched TV motorsport for many years these mixed events and variety appeal to me. I've completed no research yet and personally happy to do camping or some kind of less luxury accommodation with some support.

For context I've probably followed more the roads cars 1960's+ and motor sport touring cars, Grand Prix from 70's , early group C rather than earlier classics, later sports category road and no idea about anything bikes wise so as long as there is some of the former I'm good

This event is absolutely massive in all respects.
We are here for 4 days and might just see everything on the programme.
Full programme of Historic Racing
Hundreds of Car Club Stands
Bars and Restaurants everywhere
Live Music at night (UB40 ,Soul 2 Soul).....plus usual tribute bands

We are in the motor caravan thingy in the adjacent campsite .....which is easily the size of Cumbernauld

Potential for a campaganza......most definitely !!
Must be the biggest motoring event I have ever attended

Weather turned for the worse yesterday.
After baking sunshine for weeks.....heavens opened at 1700 hours and pelted it down for seven hours
Think lots of people huddled around tents talking and drinking pish with their prized possessions parked nearby

Site looks a bit like a World War One battlefield this morning (with Ferrari’s)

Whilst there are regular shuttle buses to get around the vast site....we brought our bicycles and have cycled everywhere

Car clubs can get special deals and display passes. I had booked to go with the McLaren owners this year, but can't fit everything in this summer so decided to sacrifice the classic. Definitely another one staying on the to do list.

Based on Comrade Boag's review, I will do Silverstone Classic some day. Probably with bikes too ;-)

Dates for next one now published, 26-28 July 2019.

For a major international event this is a no brainer for me. Been to 5 of the last 7 and 1 year was at le mans classic. Early bird tickets are 2-4-1 through car clubs, Club Lotus, LDC etc, £100 for 2 adults for 3 days.

The main Woodlands camp could swallow an army, we camp at Litchlake which is beside Force India factory and only a 5 min walk to Luffield so shuttle tractor buses not required.

Over the years seen Group C, this year was 1995-2012 Le Mans (AudiR8 and a diesel Peugeot) , and every year have F1 Cosworths from 70s until 1982. This year Classic Team Lotus had the Essex type 81, I was in the pits, its open pits everywhere. Also a JPS 72 and there was a Camel Honda of Nakajimas doing demo runs. Last year Mansels Williams of 1992 doing demo runs and that was a sight to see.

All the car clubs display infield, there is the funfair for kids, all free rides, and main stage so bicycles not really necessary. There is a shuttle bus around perimeter for taking in a race or 2 at Copse and especially Beckets.

Fri Sat live bands. This year was Noasis U22, and Soul II Soul on Friday, with UB40 on Sat. Only 1 Sat band as races into dusk with Le Mans cars. Previously I've seen Adam and the Ants, Mike & Mechanics, Status Quo, Tony Hadley, Stranglers, Boomtown rats, Bootleg Beatles, something for everyone.

got next years pencilled in already and will buy tickets through Club Lotus Feb/Mar.

For camping supplies a Lidl and Tecso 4miles away in Towcester. Drove in daily and stocked up on bbq food and sacks ice for cool bag beers .

My senile decay is at a level where I've only just remembered i attended the event with PCGB way back in 1994.
Then it was an excuse for the polishers to show off their cars (self included) in conjunction with a much smaller historic racing programme.

The sheer scale of the event has to be seen to be believed........

I agree wholeheartedly its a no brainer ...........not sure I could stand three all-nighters in succession
