BMW i3

Post by rawsco » Wed Aug 15, 2018 12:55 pm

Has anyone got one? most of our miles these days post home move are to the train station and back, Aldi and various other places dotted around a 15mile radius of home so an electric car works for us. We do occasionally twice or thrice a month visit the folks in ayr which is a round trip of about 120miles so an RX version would probably need to come into it unless I could be confident I could get a charge at a public charging station over the weekend (inconvenient)

Curious to know what they are like? Miniblonde loves them and won't look at a leaf or the likes and Im not interested in egolfs and etrons i.e. converted to electric combustion models they are all boring. I quite like the design of the i3.

Thoughts?

Yes - love it.

I've got the non-RX and it's perfect for local travel but not ideal for any distance. I've taken it to Edinburgh a few times but it means charging in Dundee on the way there and back and also while I'm in Edinburgh. If you're going on a regular route to Ayr then check out the options on the way and visit them a few times to see if they're working or being used. You can buy an annual card for £20 which gives free charging at most places.

I don't use public charging much now but I did when I first got it. It's hit or miss in that some of them are often out of service or are busy. I'm able to charge in the garage or on the drive overnight so it's not really an issue for me.

Looks are marmite but if miniblonde loves it then happy days.

Driving it is a hoot. It's great fun on the twisties because the acceleration is fantastic and it handles well with the low centre of gravity.

What you want is a Panamera Hybrid Tourismo...I really need to do a review as just handed one back after 10 days.

That would explain the recent instagram splurge!!! I’m kinda in the ‘commit to it camp’. I was considering a PHEV but range in EV is paltry. I reckon I’d need 40-50miles quoted range to survive all electric per day bar drive to the the land o’ Burns. If I can get 80-100 miles out an i3 that gets me to Ayr but I’d need a local charge to get home again. Good positive vibes from Hendeg tho will pop in and have a go of one... leasing one doesn’t seem too pricey either.

We've had one for coming up on 2 years! 120 mile reliable range.
Hoot to drive, 2 of my colleagues have bought them.

I really fancy one too, 60mile round-trip commute for me so no issues with range anxiety and we'd have a combustion-engined family car for longer trips.

Totally agree on the leaf/e-Golf/E-tron point- no appeal there thanks very much.

Christ. If these are the ranges you'd be better keeping the money in the bank and just getting taxis. Total bollox if you want my very humble and I'll informed opinion. Just another itrinket. 🤣😂

600-700 miles per month minimum mostly journeys of 20-30 miles round trip... range plenty good enough for that... cost to charge for 100 mile range about 25kwh in leccy so about 3quid, less if you’ve got solar (I don’t... yet)

So fuel bill 20 quid a month ish round it up to 30 for losses. Plus 350 for he car on a lease. Zero exise duty.

Doesn’t need to be cool or fun I’ve an Exige for that!

Not sure I could cope with that meny taxi drivers and their crap patter.

It costs the same to run as a 10 year old Gti. (All in, inc fuel). And it's brand new. And it's the first set of keys to be taken from the fleet.

I've never known anything else where people, having tried, pretty much go straight out and buy one!

Huge depreciation is a plus point for me. I’ll take a 2 year old one with 15k miles for half the cost new thanks.
