You "should" be able to add the event calendar as a static link somewhere in the menu. No need to have a whole category just for that. It could easily exist as a pinned subject on in the Events section.

I think it would look healthier if we reduced the number of rooms/categories. The structure hasn't changed in years and the usage is reduced in some of the areas. The threads can still exist and be available in the search. Maybe slightly more radical than some of the other suggestions but this change could work well.

Suggest the following:

General - To absorb announcements, calendar and gallery. A
Spotted - Works for members and unusual spots etc.
Newbies - Intro.

Maintenance - Collapse technical, Care Care and Insurance together.
Events - meetings and events.
Trackdays - Trackday antics of course but also absorb motorsport.
Suppliers - Collapse Testimonials, Feedback and Offers.

I don't believe it needs to be more than that.
I was going to suggest a reduction in forums too, but I'd go further than that I think.

For example, collapsing technical, Care Care and Insurance together does nothing to make the place look busier, simply because car car and insurance are more or less never used.

I'd probably end up with perhaps only 3 or 4 forums. Starting with something like:
Discussion (consisting all "The Lounge" areas, plus gallery, insurance, testimonials, and probably motorsport)
Maintenance (oily bits, car care etc)
Events (track days. car shows, etc.)
perhaps Suppliers as Ferg suggested above would work too.

Having the split was great when it's busy, but now makes the place seem more derelict than it probably is!
'16 MINI Cooper S - Family fun hatch
'98 Lotus Elise - Fun day car
'07 Fiat Panda 100HP - Daily puddle jumper
'04 Maserati Coupe GT - Manual, v8, Italian...
