Danish Audiophiles

Was just pestering Woody about some kit and realised that there appears to be a remarkable contingent of SE that listen to their music on Bang & Olufsen kit. Generally it’s 80s hardware with the occasional 2018 intervention via Sonos or Chromecast.

Couple of years back I refurbished some old family CX100s and CX50s which are now employed as my surround kit.

Woody managed to find me a rather lovely set of Penta 3s after I found Pete a set a couple of years back.

All of them are driven from a Denon AV amp with native Spotify or via optical from the Android TVs Spotify client.

My 90s CX35s are retired to the barn and rarely get fired up.

Anyone else care to describe their setup?

S

Cambridge audio stereo amp (which replaced an absolutely fantastic NAD which exploded sadly) but was the closest I could get to the sound as the NAD stuff had lost its edge. Wired to 2 tannoy revolution R2 floorstand speakers which are brilliant and now almost 19 years old bought new with my Y2K bonus for being on call!

Spotify connect on this set up and then In the kitchen / social room I have 2x Sonos Play and a sonos Sub which goes up to ear bleeding levels and sounds absolutely fantastic tuned with the sonos room tuning thing.

Very low tech here. A bluetooth speaker in the kitchen. That's it :-)

My brother in law (still) works for Cambridge Audio I think if anyone wants a small staff discount ...

Cheers,
Robin

27yr old NAD 3240PE here (which I bloody love). It powers a pair of Tannoy V4i's, accompanied by a Tannoy TS2.10 active sub which takes a feed from the pre-amp.

Plus a Devialet Phantom (Silver) for more casual listening in the kitchen. (That bad boy goes down to 16hz 😎 )

I was still using bits of my original hi fi bought late 80’s until about 2 years ago. Audiolab 8000a amp and Rogers LS4a speakers.

But while on holiday, my son overheated the amp big time while playing a connected iPhone at very high amplification for hours during his party.

Circuit board severely melted and burnt and blew main driver on one speaker when the amp failed.

So now all modern with a sonos 5 and sonos 1 playing Spotify, amazon music through phones mostly.

Still fancy getting some old kit at some point and linking up music to see how it sounds.

Also got an old CD player, a Marantz CD63SE sitting in the loft, came across it a few years ago, was going to chuck it out then saw they sell for £50-£90 on eBay.

So did I sell it ?
Nope still in the loft.

Audiolab 8000A amp with Tannoy Mercury speakers. Had since early 90s and replaced 80s Denon equipment .

inputs = Marantz KI signature CD, Systemdek IIX turntable (21st 30 yrs ago) , and the TV & Bluray also wired into the old Audiolab with RCA phonos.

I have hundreds of LPs & CDs so don't bother with spotify. In the Elise it is CD or vroom vroom, and in Cooper its Radio 6 on DAB

Audiolab :(
I seriously debated buying Systemdek at the time but decided on a Manticore Mantra turntable instead, it’s in the loft as well.
We must have been reading the same magazines in the same era and going to the same shops to see what was available for listening to. :)

Nice thread, Sanjoy.

And fab to see Tannoys cropping up so often!

2 systems in our gaff.

Lounge...

Harmon Kardon AVR100 AV receiver

Sony telly, Sony BluRay and Wii lashed up to it.

Plays through Tannoy Eclipse ported 2-ways (30 yrs old this Dec and still belting it out).

Tannoy centre and Mordaunt Short rears.

Garden room... (very old skool)

Rotel RA820 amp (c. 1985)

B&W ported 2-ways

Sources generally laptop with LED projector, Pioneer DVD player, or iPod / iPhone / iPad / tablet for Plex music.

Rarely have (make?) the time to sit and enjoy my Hifi these days. My Sennheiser earbuds and iphone probably deliver more hours of music & radio (podcasts) than either of those setups.

But do still have the odd moment when I turn Pink Floyd up to 11

Before I went all Digital I had an Linn LP12 through a Quad 33 & 303 into a pair of KEF Concertos. It sounded gorgeous. All digital AV Receivers now though.
