I don't know if my reply is going to help you or not but I think you shouldn't allow them smartphones at the moment, Just give them a Nokia mobile phone for calls only?

While I disagree Marshall, I'm interested in your reasoning. At this point the child in question is six months away from senior school and this brings a number of reasons to get connected. For instance they need to navigate home by themselves so being able to phone for pickups or other reasons is sensible. Like it or not, phones are increasingly part of the social engagement at that age too. I also think being educated in messaging etiquette and learning the tools and some of the less desirable parts of being connected to be beneficial at this stage. We chose not to do it until now, but feel it's an appropriate time.
