NC500 Bad Press

"Police Scotland can confirm that four men are to be reported in connection with speeding offences detected in the Highlands at the weekend.

The men - aged 55, 46, 35 and 22 - will be reported after four vehicles were detected travelling at 128mph within the 60mph limit on the A890 at Glencarron, west of Achnasheen early on the afternoon of Saturday, April 27.

The detection followed directly on from information received from a concerned member of the public.

Road Policing Sergeant Chris Murray said “It is disappointing to see some drivers are willing to place themselves and others at risk by driving at excessive speeds and in a dangerous manner.

"We will continue to proactively enforce the speed limit while also carrying out preventative work under Operation Cedar.

"The roads of the Highlands have so much to offer for drivers and many travel great distances to enjoy them - please make sure you do so safely and at an appropriate speed.

"I would urge people to take responsibility for their own driving - if you are tempted to speed then consider what the consequences could be of your decision."

Anyone with concerns about the manner of driving can call 101 or 999 in an emergency."

there will always be someone to ruin it for everyone else. Not surprised really with the number of organised car tours etc I imagine the locals are pretty hacked off with them all coming through and will be more than happy to report any car(s) they don't like the look of.

I don't know about that TBH. The boost to the local economy I think is seen as a huge positive for the entire route all off the back of the NC500 being a great drivers road. I think in general there will be acceptance of some spirited driving but 128mph is kicking the arse out of it and they deserve to be report if you're going to draw that much attention.

I read an article the other day about someone who has repeatedly been leaving nails scattered about on certain parts of the route. Insane.

Like they spread tacks on the road for the cyclists in the Etape.
Open road driving is fair enough but screaming through 30/40's in villages is out of order. Having just come back from their I think a bit of respect works wonders. Got the odd 2 finger salute a local, but more gave a wave and a smile and many love seeing and taking photo's of the cars in the car parks, at cafes etc. You can see how the money generated is being well spent on facilities and stuff.

It's always the minority who ruin it for everyone else, whether that is the idiot drivers doing 128mph or the idiot local putting tacks down. Both are just putting people at unnecessary risk.

I was thinking of doing the NC500 in the Lotus this year, but may not bother.

When I did it last year in the Maserati, I had virtually no problems at all, with the exception of 1 idiot in a silver Ford Focus who absolutely refused to reverse back to a passing place, despite it being right behind them, instead just sitting pointing, then edging closer and closer to my car, and revving their engine. They eventually got out of their car and started walking towards me shouting, at which point I thought f-this and reversed about 100 yards back up a hill to get out of their way as they pulled closer and closer

Had it not been a family of 4 in a crap box ancient worthless Focus facing just me, alone in the middle of nowhere in a Maserati, perhaps it would have been different, but I'm not one for confrontation and it didn't seem worth the risk. Left me feeling pretty sour for a while too

Did it autumn 2017. Traffic was ok. Like Campbell I'll stick to west and NW, maybe clockwise as far as tongue next time then straight south . That will be the SJ500 starting Glasgow west end and up to Fort Bill

That's what I did as a route with my brother last year early summer on the advice of the good folks on here and it worked well. Probably a bit of luck with no midge, sunshine and few cars so unlikely to repeat it, it's just one of those for the memory bank, couldn't have worked out better really and to think I did it in an Exige S1 with no breakdown cover because I was that confident in the little madcap machine

Well, yes. In that case I'll probably never do it too as I barely touched the A9 , sort of the NC -NE 500ish, though with Lecht and Glenshee included, it was more like 850 for me.
