If you were in the lucky position to be approaching retirement and still have your health. Not me I must add, I have a several years to go yet.
Rule 1 £30k budget
Rule 2 You will be keeping it for at least 15 years
Rule 3 It must be "French Frolic" compatible..
What would you have as your "probably the last sporty fun car I will ever buy" car?
New or nearly new Caterham?

I think I’ve already got mine John
Or in my waning years, maybe get me ol’ Evora back

10 years from retirement. Min.

As its a retirement car, if you want to keep something for 15 years then the fact that as you get older the appeal of fitting into/extracting yourself out of a low down sports car may diminish.
These options will at least mean that you don't hesitate to go out for a fun drive

Narrowbody 997. I'd probably blow the budget for a later 997.2 C2S. Coupe, manual, simple spec, no toys. Dark green or blue.

Got a Mustang for my retirement in 2018 - hopefully not my last sports car.

Easy one for me - a perfectly maintained Honda S2000, which is now in the region of 15-20k for a really good one.
Fast enough for the track, enough boot space for those dreamy European trips with the Mrs, and still the best engine/gearbox combination I've ever driven.

Adds that to the list..

No matter how old you are, everyone will assume you're a spotty 17 year old yoof.
You can comfortably carry 3 other pensioner passengers and their luggage.
Plus, you can wear a baseball cap, backwards, and folk won't simply think you've gone doolally.
And... it's quick.

Easy- Cayman or Boxster (depending on if you like the roof on or off).
Very few people are still willing (and able!) to climb into and out of a Lotus at 60+, never mind put up with the noise and harshness.
Nothing can touch a small Porsche for the useability/specialness/sportiness blend. That's what I'd go for anyway.
