I'll never get it (but each to his own)

So i'm walking round the housing estate where i've lived for 25+ years and there's a guy cleaning a 911 from the 80s (I think he said it was an 84) which i had never seen before.
After a chat it turns out that it's done 3000 miles in the time he's had it, which is 20 years!

Completely reasonable

And will be a barn find when he pops his clogs ... which someone like us will buy and then rev the arse out of it on track somewhere ... undoing in 3 laps what he's "preserved" for 50 years

that's if we're still allowed petrol by then, of course.

It will be nice for someone to find a low mileage preserved car, shame not to use 'as intended' but maybe he's a crap driver and realises he'd be in a hedge backwards if 'used as intended'!

Neighbour of mine had a 993 and did exactly that, used it everyday until it got away from him and wrote it off. Nice car, shame it ended up in a field, on its roof. TBF he walked away from that, but admitted he was lucky.

I kind of get it. I'm in a position now where I just don't have much time to use my car... but I also want to keep it for when I do want to use it.
3000 miles in 20 years is quite excessive though. That's almost into Renmure territory.

Completely get it as well.
I am not getting the time for to use the Boxster Spyder but as its sitting in the garage I can use it when I want (albeit infrequently)
Looking at my past MOT's I am sitting in the same camp:
Jan 2013 - 8601 miles
Feb 2014 - 12174 miles
Feb 2015 - 12881 miles
Feb 2016 - 13,236 miles
Feb 2017 - 13,802 miles
Feb 2018 - 14,099 miles
Feb 2019 - 14,638 miles
May 2020 - 14,684 miles
At this rate, looks like I may just do double the mileage of tonyg's neighbour in 20 years.
Although considering the Spyder got a £3k bill from Porsche Edinburgh in May - may need to use it a little bit more than I have to justify the expense

I did over 1000miles in my first three days of ownership and then within six months another 3000miles on the French Frolic 2015 trip which was recorded by SatNav and also the milage for the four trackdays too, on top of that.
It was a brilliant two week trip.

I don't get it, 150 miles p.a. why not just hire a supercar for the day or weekend once a year for a road trip.
Or one of those track days where you get to drive 3 cars for 3 laps each .

Simple as I thought exactly the same with the usage I have for the Spyder.
It's all about the fact that the car is sitting in the garage ready to go. Something like hiring a car/track day hire means you have to plan ahead. If the cars in the garage, you have spare time, weather is nice, then you just grab the keys and go (albeit infrequently).

That's how it should be done! (in my opinion at least) also second that it was a great trip! When i picked up my first V6 (it was six months old and had 1k miles on it. Second day of ownership was a full day at knockhill for a book a track track day. I bought the car with the sole intention of using it for track days and Frolic which is exactly what i did with it.
Also don't get the time to drive my cars as much as i would like these days but as said having them there for the times that i do get to enjoy them is motivating for me, plus it gives me something to polish when i'm not driving them

My elise mileage is limited these days ... but I remember buying my orange S2 Exige new from MMC, driving it up to Tut's and back and up/down the M74 ("run in mileage"), first service, Oulton Park, the ring all in a week

... left the cars in the garage at the Koln airport for a month, flew back, did it again, drove home. Got stopped on the way home with 4 bald tyres; luckily the police didn't seem that bothered (I think they stopped me to look at the car) .... probably more miles in 5 weeks than I've done in the last 5 years
But ring in September and Anglesey/Outlon Park/Cadwell at the end of October with two weeks on the canals in the middle.

3000 miles in 20 years! Wow, I thought since I bought my Elise and doing 3000 miles in a year was low useage lol

46 miles in 1 year and a £3k bill for the privilege = £65/mile (plus petrol, insurance & tax)

Hope you really enjoyed them
