Post by weeheavy » Thu Jun 18, 2020 8:18 pm

Help, Have managed to get scammed after paying for what appears to be a non existent car. Can anybody assist/offer advice and as the scam was in Hungary continental experience could be handy. Appears to be a very professional job ,that's my excuse and i'am sticking to it!

Presume bank transfer rather than debit or credit card payment ?

Section 75 exists for full payment recovery as long as part of the goods were payed for by credit card. Debit card payment chargebacks scheme not as good but provides some protection.

Hence if possible always pay at least a small deposit via credit card.

Ouch! Sorry, cant' recommend anyone either and don't really want to add to your woes but I suspect the lawyer requirements could add significantly to your losses. I would start with the fraud department at your bank and see if they can offer some advice first.

Agreed. Also, possibly worth checking with home insurance to see if you can get legal cover through them. Good luck.

Most home insurance policy’s have exclusions for transactions involving motor vehicles. I found that out when I tried to used my legal cover for my 350 woes. Check the small print might save you a fair amount of time.

Well as a positive a friend of mine got scammed for the purchase of campervan, full funds transferred through what appeared to be an ebay link. Also very professional outfit. He realised soon after making the transfer that he hadn't actually logged into his ebay account. The site was a fraudulent cloned replica. The authorities were onto them however and he got all his money back some months later! Fingers crossed for you ;)
