Exige S2 and S3 are 2 totally different cars to drive. There is very little similarity between them other than the interior. The S3 d has huge mechanical grip and consequently covers sound much quicker with less driver involvement than an S2 at the same speed.
I can understand why some would rather have an S2 than S3. S2 is lighter on it's feet and doesn't wear out components as fast as an S3, there are a lot more parts about for S2's and they are considerably cheaper to repair given they are much closer to the Elise where the S3 is closer to an Evora at the back and Elise (ish) at the front but doesn't actually share many parts with either.

Just my 2p having owned both.
Just for clarity I would have another S3 but still think the new ones are massively over priced.

@Mike, thanks for the post. Would be interested to understand the list of running costs for an Exige v6 if you get 5 mins. The information online is fairly fragmented. Helps understand what to budget per year. I wont be doing track days for ref.

If not doing track days, I wonder if S3 Exige could be reasonable to run, then - other than fuelling?

It’s a box I’d like to tick but just short term. I think I’d tire of the Elise sized interior on an Evora-sized car

I have had my V6 for five years now and done over 40,000 miles.What do you want to know?

James Hall has just bought a V6 after having a Cup250 and a Supercharged Elise before that, so between us we should be able to give you the information that you want.

In short, buy the V6 as it is an excellent car for the road. You will not be disappointed. #bemoretut and get it bought.

I have had mine for the same 5 years, 20k miles, and mostly trackdays and driving to and from them. Great car, and I dont think it will be expensive to run on the road. On track, it is hard on brakes for me, so more expensive than other S1 and S2, s but mechanicaly it's been bullet proof, I have just replaced the rear spherical joints on mine, which is the only thing other than brakes, that I have had to do. So as far as road use, I think it will be put fuel in it and go. I think I get about 200 to 220 miles on a tank for road use.
I have also just fitted a set of pilot sport 4,s and they seem really good on the damp, slippy roads so far.

I’m 1600 miles into my new 350 sport ownership. Had it 7 weeks. So far all that has needed done at the first run in service is the front wheels needed rebalanced. So far loving the change from my Cup 250.

At the equivalent point of ownership of the Cup 250 the horn stopped working, the AC compressor failed & leaked from delivery, the carbon seats rattled in the seat rails, sticky driver door bottom and faulty brake pedal switch kept safety features in limp mode.

So reliability award easily goes to the Exige V6 for the first 1600miles from new.

Yes I calculated that discs, pads, tyres and servicing are typically 25% more expensive. My insurance required a S7 tracker too at £200 and £99 per annum (Vodafone), road tax is £80 more per year too. Fuel consumption is higher and I’m easily getting 10mpg lower.

To offset my car has 3yrs free servicing included, and I certainly didn’t pay full list price either. Some great deals to be done on the last few Exige 350 sports when I was looking (now they’ve stopped making them - only 410 and 430 available to order)

Thanks for the reply lads, honestly a great help :thumbsup Gives me some insight into what I am letting myself in for. You guys have been running performance cars for years, its been a while since I have run anything I actually wanted to drive. My knowledge coming from a pretty low level here.

Figures below based on pulling data from various places over the last year or so.

So say 2000 miles a year at the most.
  • £350 insurance
  • £280 A service
  • £460 B service
  • £60 MOT
  • £565 Road Tax
  • £500 Full set tyres thanks Stu :thumbsup
  • £262 Front/rear pads thanks steve :thumbsup


Is this accurate ?
Anything else I need to consider?

Trackers not an issue, I have 5 Thatcham approved sitting on my desk :lol:

I asked Parks for a price list when they get organised but nothing received yet.
Have not talked to CMC for a few years but would be interested to understand pricing.

@Steve #BeMoreTut :D I love that.

Will get there. Currently talking to an architect about turning half a double garage in to an extra room. My dilemma is now should I do this work first before the Exige purchase as I didnt want it sitting on the drive during the process.

Scott, if you're lookiy at approximately 2k per annum, tyres and brakes won't be an annual expense, even if doing a very occasional track day.

I just paid £500for a full set of PS4, s so not that much. You won't wear out discs on the road, and pads are about £150 ish for standard... (more than good enough for road) per end, and will last for years at 2000 Road miles.

TBF you're not comparing chips to chips. Your cup had a lot of extras your exige doesn't. You would have to compare an Exige 430 cup to your Elise. My cup was rattley, creaked and banged on bump roads just because it has less in it. No sound deadening etc, and also your Elise was either cursed or you are , never know someone to have so much trouble with one car. I guess time will tell if it's you, the car or both :wink:

Also it's a pretty pointless comparison. They are aimed at different market segments, price points. And they are both completely different to drive, The new exige is also much wider/bigger overall but there is no gain on the interior (my biggest bug bear about the exige).
Also worth remembering that for a fun day out sports car that isn't going to see the track there are a lot of much better options out there.

As Stuart says standard brake pads are about £130 per set. £260 for front and back. Ferodo DS2500 have very good wear for road use.

I change my rear tyres each year and fronts every two approximately and have been using the Michelin Cup 2 tyres which are slightly dearer than the PS4s. If you are only doing 2000miles a year and only road driving, then you will get more life from the tyres.
