Help.

Post by craigs135s » Wed Jul 29, 2020 11:24 pm

Hi All,

Looking for some help. I Brought the Europa out the garage for the first time in a long time (new Baby 15 weeks ago) to give it a clean before heading up North this weekend with it. When reversing out I heard a bang yup the spring has snapped on one of the Nitrons. I will speak with them tomorrow and hope they can deliver them Friday. Can anyone help fit them in short notice or know someone near buy that’s reliable that can do it for me? I am based in Fenwick East Ayrshire.

Thanks

Kenneth Brown Motors Hillington is your nearest proven specialist.

But Woody or Pete S may have more localised suggestions.

A full damper swap is a do-able DIY job - done it several times. Putting just a fresh spring on a damper may need compressor tools however.

It is very straightforward as Campbell says, they will be adjustable platform though so no spring compressors needed.

Should change at least that axle pair of springs but if one has gone I’d look to change the whole set. Ideally get the geo checked but will be close if you’re careful the ride height setup is the same. At some point they might need a rebuild?

If I was still up in Ayr, I'd have shot over, but I'm an hour further south now. It's literally two bolts to get the damper off and as Ali says, they are adjustable platforms, so just clean the threads and wind the collars off (having measured reasonably accurately, how far they are threaded on, to get the ride height back to the ballpark)

Only remotely specialised tool would be the Nitron pin spanner, but you can use a suitable sized drill bit in the hole to wind them back on easily when they are off the car. If you've got even basic tools, it's a driveway job. :thumbsup

It's DIY-able. Might be able to pop down if it arrives on Friday.

Great Dom thanks

Does the spring rate off 300 sound right. That looks like the number that’s on the spring?

If they are NSS single way adjustable then the standard spring rates are 350 lbs/" front, 450 lbs/" rear.

It will be written on the outside of the spring, you should be able to clean it up, spin it around to see. Just quote them the full number but it will be something like:
NITRON 0x00-225-0450HD xx/xx

First x is the length in inches, 225 is the diameter (2.25") and 0450 in this case is the spring rate.

I'd be happy to lend a hand too if needed - I'm just up the road in SE Glasgow. My DIY skills are better than they used to be but these other guys are the pros you need really. I'll be available some of Friday. Is this turning into a mini Lotus meet? ;)

I just had a look at the fronts and one of them has also snapped 🙄. Full set now ordered from Adam at Nitron. They will be here tomorrow at some point. 450 front 600 rear.
