Well... I drove the M4 today after a fortnight and 4 or 500 miles in the model 3, I was genuinely nervous that I’d have ruined it.

The good news is, and I realised this coming off a roundabout with about a 1/4 to a half turn of opposite lock, that the model
3 whilst very very good is basically an AWD Audi with better tech.

The M4 has not lost its shine. The two cars are hugely different both amazing in their own way. What a tremendous combination to have the choice of!

On the battery cost Tesla are targeting $100 a kWh the last battery day goes into detail in how they plan on achieving this and the resultant low cost electric car.

2.5 tons. Jesus. France has now introduced new road tax, an additional 10 euros per kg over 1800kgs. Good idea but I’d reduce weight limit to say 1300 kgs . An XR3 in my day wasnt much heavier than a modern Elise . Still fitted 4 lads, weekend bags and a dug.
But had absolutely no crash protection or safety systems. Folded like a cheap suite when it hit anything and rusted away before your very eyes especially the mk4.
But other than that they were great

Rose tinted specs on there Scott?
Considering mk 1 & 2 Escorts going for £50k these days maybe an XR3i would make a good investment.
As for rose tinted specs, aren’t they the best shade 8)

When I heard there was a Fiat 500 EV thought it might do us a city car. But £20k after govt grants, who they kidding. Youngsters can’t afford that and I think I’d rather have an Abarth 595 for that money and stick with 4 star ⭐️

Yeah, well I'm targetting being a billionaire . . . it'll take time, meanwhile the reality is the reality and the high costs are the high costs . . . it'll happen eventually . . . whether it's battery tech or something else in that timeframe remains to be seen . . .

There is plenty milage left in ICE tech . . . OEM's are being driven into producing EV's, they are not making money on them other than avoiding corporate fleed CO2 tax . . . it'll change, but it'll take time . . . in the meantime, enjoy super cheap, stunning, diesels ;-)

I think battery costs are falling pretty fast now. I don't know at what point a Fiat500 EV is going to be cost neutral vs the petrol version though. Probably half that - like $50/kWh. That's going to take a long time to hit. But the Model 3/BWM 3/A4 kind of territory is going to be cost neutral much sooner than that.

I see Skoda’s Citigo E didn’t last long. Wonder if it was just a proving ground for newer models.

It seems daft that they want to ban small petrol city cars like the Aygo, C1, Citigo. etc. They can be had brand new for <£10k, very low emissions, 50-60mpg, cheap as chips for parts & servicing, etc. I just can't see there being a decent electric alternative available for the same price and with a similar range before 2030.

100% this. We've had our Citigo since new in April 2014, been a brilliant cheap to run and reliable thing. Now run by our 19yr old son and with 2yrs NCB is only £340 to insure, and £20 to tax. Can't argue :thumbsup

They plan to allow them if they are hybrid, so I would expect all these 1l petrol engines to become hybrids. Toyota already has an excellent hybrid in this class, I imagine the others do too.

Plenty of time for hydrogen fuelled cars to come along if it turns out that 15 years isn't enough to get the battery cost down to something the market can support.

Full scale hydrogen production is coming whether or not cars need it, so that chicken and egg of the infrastructure not existing because the cars don't exist will be less of a stumbling block than it has been.

The investment required to get full scale hydrogen production going is hard to overestimate, though. It's government scale money needed, even if we manage to recycle some of the gas infrastructure.

It's going to be an interesting 20 years, if I am spared!

Happy new year to all!

Yes, but a basic Yaris hybrid is almost £20k, that's an £8-10k premium for the hybrid system, you are never going to see that back in either petrol or environmental savings compared to a plain 1l petrol engine. Even if the cost delta halves it's still a steep 50% premium on what was a cheap & cheerful car.

They are only banning new ones. You can buy a 1L on the eve of the end of sale and keep it for 10 years ;-).
