2030 - No more new ICE
Ambitious plans to ban sales of new petrol & diesel cars in just over 9 years
Best make the use of our cars now, definitely future classics, if only we could drive somewhere
Helluva challenge to put in place generation, infrastructure etc. Given the planning and lifecycle of most ICE vehicles, 9 years to radically redesign powertrains and deliver economically to the masses is huge. Any with hybrid tech in the pipeline will need to shelf, I would think.

The ban is on the sale of P+D cars by 2030. Not P+D cars banned from the road in 2030.... They'll be on the road for another 15 years after that at least I would have thought!

I still think of this as cynical politics at it's worst.
Blojob the fat adulterer proposes it with no downside and lots of upside.

The charging infrastructure is the challenge.

That raises a serious point. If working from home at least part of the week becomes the new norm for tens of thousands if not millions will HS2 be required . It’s a £100 mill bill that could be better spent elsewhere, green energy, COVID debt mountain etc .

There is no timeframe to ban petrol from road. So in theory if still on sale buy a new Elise in 2030 and run it another 20 yrs. I’ll be 65 in ten years (ffs that’s a scary thought) . So in theory I could buy a new ICE which would see me out . Wonder what my K series S2 will be worth by then

I also think that there’s a reluctance to move to leccy, why I don’t know? But I don’t think the 2030 date is ambitious enough it panders to the commercial interests of the ICE manufacturers. Demand will drive charging infrastructure but in the most part people will charge at home, at 7.2Kw most people’s daily usage can be recouped in couple of hours (300Wh per mile is 24 miles an hour charge rate [ok 20 with losses]) that’s an hour and a half charge a night at 7.2kw for a 10k pa user, hardly grid breaking and with local generation via solar an absolute doddle with current infra so I don’t buy the infra thing. Tesla have nailed the supercharger network for long range. Where there’s a will there’s a way.

I still think infra. Lot of my driving is well beyond local. I’m not alone.

We drive to Harris a couple of times a year, it was a big factor in the recent Tesla purchase decision with a plug in hybrid option being the close following other option. There are plenty of options to get up there for example with zero stress and that’s not supercharger network. The range of the car is sufficient to get there in one go (perhaps not in the winter) but in practice there would be a short comfort stop and top up en route. There will be edge cases of course but I think the infrastructure is there mostly now. Reliability issues on the chargers seem to be dropping too, I’ve been watching a few on zap map that would be important to us and they are rarely broken now that usage is increasing.

Will be a long time before the situation concerns us directly. Had plans for an EV purchase earlier this year but those were binned when lockdown stalled my business.
We’ll let others blaze the trail and flush out the bugs meantime

One of my neighbours has just handed back his Leaf and has a Tesla 3 on order - ideal for his (not currently due to Covid/WFH) daily commute from Dundee to Perth, and he plugs in at work
Seen a few of the new VW id3 around and like the look.
Mrs B's F56 Cooper just got replaced but lekky doesn't work for us yet as my occasional daytrips to Aberdeen and back aren't doable.

Because it's a forced choice. Everything that has gone before has been an incremental change to cars, general upward improvement in safety, economy and performance. The change to electric is a massive shift in the everything, driving style, re-charging, practicality etc.
Also no mention of commercials, just cars probably because there is no viable battery tech for trucks and vans, at least not with suitable range to price ratio.
Personally I think it is all a massive scam and in years to come we will see the true impact manufacturing all these batteries will have.
I just hope we don't look back and wonder WTF were we all thinking.

Can’t ignore the cost savings either. My leccy rate averages 5p Per KWh (sometimes I’m being paid to use) when I’d be charging the car so that’s £0.015 per mile vs about £0.25 which turns a £250 a month diesel bill into 15quid (which I’ve easy recouped and more by being smarter with my leccy tariff choice)
