current used car prices

I started looking about a month ago for a replacement family SUV thing. There were quite a few options I would have enquired about had I been in a position to buy back then. I had kept an eye on them over the last few weeks and all remained there. Within the last week or so all 4 or 5 cars I would have considered have sold. A couple of new ones have popped up as per my autotrader filters and all have disappeared again or marked as sold in less than 2 days. Having seen around 2 or 3 cars of one particular model matching my filters, there are now none. For another model it has gone from 14 cars available in my range to just 5, and the lowest price point has increased by about £1500 in just over a week.
I called about a car this morning and just looked at it again on-line and they have increased the price by £400 in last 2 hours! Now I am in a position to buy it seems prices are on the up and availability dropping.
I am guessing those that have saved money during Covid or held off buying are becoming more confident and starting to buy or upgrade. Anyone else looking noticed anything similar?

Don't know if it helps you but if you are looking for Land Rover or Jaguar SUV's, then I can put you in touch with a contact in Farnell Leeds who we bought our Evoque Ember from in December?

Just in case she knows of anything coming in?

Thanks George. If you get a minute drop me details here or via a PM. Not been a successful day in making progress - left messages elsewhere and no call backs. Definitely feels like things have turned these last few weeks....

They’ll turn again once people start losing their jobs

All cynicism apart, Dickson, I’m sorry to hear your frustration. Used market def seems upside down. Worth a look at new order again instead? Might be some deals to be had. Close to quarter end too

Thanks George. :thumbsup

Lol, didn’t mean to sound frustrated, Campbell, and of course not looking to take advantage of anyone’s misfortune. I am surprised at the pick-up in the market the last couple of weeks. I also thought there would be lots of trade-ins for the new plate around this time and was expecting the opposite to what I am seeing. Prices up and availability down. Anyway, impatience got the better of me today. Deposit paid at lunchtime and looking forward to new-car Friday :D

On a similar note I had been looking at five Mk5 Golf GTI's a couple of weeks ago, they were low mileage higher priced examples. I had book marked the adverts, just had a look and they have all been sold. At least I no longer have to test the buying of one with the wife, maybe best I stick with what I've got.

The offset is I am seeing the same on the other side. I have always ended up trading in our main car the last few times we have changed despite advertising privately first. This time I had 3 calls about the wife's GLC and sold it privately. Also the MINI I stuck in the Classifieds on here sold 2 days after I put it up for sale elsewhere.

Was a very nice MINI that.

But not our colour. Plus not allowed to buy just now

Interesting. Looks like the global semi-conductor supply problem is having a serious effect on reducing new car production too. Very likley driving up used car prices.

Suffering from poor sales, car manufacturers cut their orders from the Chinese factories making computer chips. In response, the chip supply from factories was transferred to other sectors that had high demands ...... And unable to retrieve cancelled orders when demand for cars grew, Volkswagen, Honda, Toyota and General Motors all had to reduce production.

Yep there has been a definite difference in the market.

Just prior to Covid I we were looking to replace the Boxster Spyder with an Aston Martin N430 that was in stock in Edinburgh. As Edinburgh's trade in was well off the mark, I explored trading it in with other dealers to see whether it was worth it but their prices were pitifully low.

A year and a bit later and my advert has gone live also on Pistonheads, got a number of requests from dealer to buy as trade and the price has increased by £5k.

Still not enough to get me to sell to trade however.
