Collecting Cars for Selling

Just asking from curiosity if anyone here (or knows anyone) who has sold a car via this rapidly-expanding platform?

Curious to hear of experiences good or bad.....

...a friend has just sold his watch on the watch equivalent but it's set up a little different, so not sure it's comparable.

No personal experience but heard on Pistonheads that there are people happy and unhappy with the platform.

Think some people got burnt when purchasing a car which was not up to as described.

Also heard that a lot of the sellers were "encouraged" to lower their reserve price close to the ending date so that CC could get their commission.

Unfortunately I think the Pistonheads thread in the supercar section was pulled due to Pistonheads concern of any litigation due to forum comments. They do seem a little bit over zelous but that is their perogative.

You may be able to read the thread in a history web search however.

I did hear that they strongly encourage you to use their photographer, which obviously isn't free so selling no longer becomes free

I think other than that selling is pretty responsibility-free, it's the buyer who faces the potential 6% mark-up (i.e. Collecting Cars cut) regardless if the sale goes through or not, as all they claim to do is introduce buyers to sellers, get their fee, then walk away...

Yep, spot on. The contentious issue was the "Managed Sale" as believe a number of traders used that to get away from the SOG act.

However as a private seller that is not of your concern

Also think Mike Brewer is setting up a site with a similar business model from what I scanned of his WD facebook feed, but that may be too much in the infancy for your needs.

There is also "The Market" but as your no doubt aware it is you that front ups the fee.

There is also Classic Cars which have set up an auctioning format but I do not think they have the exposure and may work dependant on the car.

Personally from a buyers perspective I prefer "The Market" as they give you am estimates guide which is absent from CC.

I think he was very happy with the result.

Don't think I'd ever buy anything on it because there just seems to be too much murky stuff about who owns what with certain cars. However, I think as a genuine private seller it would be different. I think you'd have to be fairly firm about maintaining the reserve and not bowing to pressure to reduce it as the auction goes on but there are clearly buyers for most things.

Yes there was pressure to reduce reserve in that final few minutes. I stuck to my reserve as that was the least I’d take for it. Would’ve been happy to the advertise elsewhere if it didn’t sell.

Pretty straightforward though.

Scotty - I haven't, but not sure my motor is something which fits their remit (the £210k TVR isn't comparable)

A friend is pals with Graham Davidson, and has just sold his 991 Targa via them
