Suggestions for a Good 3-4 Hour Drive From Edinburgh

Post by greido » Thu Jul 01, 2021 9:19 pm

It’s not often I get the time to be able to go for a drive for the sake of it but have some spare time tomorrow afternoon and fancied taking the Evora out for a decent bit of exercise, unfortunately I’m lacking a little inspiration so was wondering if anyone could recommend a good route that would be around 3-4 hours round trip, with as little traffic as possible.
The weather forecast tomorrow looks good heading north so that would probably be my preference or I’d have headed down to Duns.
Any ideas would be greatly received!

Stirling, Callander, Lochernhead, Tyndrum, Dalmally, Inveraray (coffee), Rest & Be Thankful, Arrochar, South side of Loch Long to Faslane (careful, very narrow), A817 back over the hill to Loch Lomond, Balloch, home via A811 to Stirling or south via Fintry & Carronbridge.

I'd go for this:

Edin - Powmill - Crieff - Aberfeldy - Killin (Capercallie for grub) - Lochearnhead - Dukes Pass - Aberfoyle - Port of Menteith - Arnprior - Fintry - Stirling - Edinburgh:

Google says 5 1/2 hours for that, but from experience that would be more like 4 hrs. Would consider missing the dukes pass on a weekend afternoon, and go Callender - Arnprior. HTH

Or slightly shorter alternative;

Edin - Powmill - Crieff - Aberfeldy - Killin - Lochearnhead - Comrie - Braco - Powmill - Edinburgh

Many thanks for the suggestions; I went with Dominic’s first option which was absolutely brilliant, had a great evening for it and once I was past the Queensferry crossing the roads were pretty empty until I got to Callander.
Hopefully I’ll get to do it again soon and also try the other routes suggested.
I’ve had the Evora since 2019 but only managed about 2000 miles since I got it, today is definitely one of the best I’ve had in it and the first proper drive since Craig Moncrieff fitted a new exhaust and it sounded great, big improvement over the standard ‘Sport’ exhaust.
Thanks again to Dominic for literally mapping out such a great route 👍

is there still the temporary bridge in Glen Devon?

Where do you stay in Edinburgh? The Lotus Ecosse group are meeting at Luca's in Musselburgh at 9.30am on Sunday for a drive down to Duns.

Hope that you can manage some more days like this and get some miles on your car.

I’m sure there was a temporary bridge with traffic lights around Glen Devon, I didn’t have to stop so didn’t pay much attention to where I was. There are significant road works which closes the A823 on the way to Glen Devon, from memory, the road closed at around 20:00 and the diversion was lengthy.
I stay in Craigleith in Edinburgh, a trip down to Duns is definitely on my ‘to do’ list but unfortunately have already made plans for tomorrow so wouldn’t be able to join the Lotus Ecosse group for the trip, hopefully be able to do something similar another time.
@C7Steve, hopefully I will be able to get out more often in the Evora, I only use the car when I’m going out of the city so it’s been very under used for a long time; it was great to get out in it just for fun and not feel like I was just using it to get somewhere.

The temp bridge caught my number plate so you were lucky! :x

I'm in West Lothian but know Craigleith & Blackhall well for work & school! :cheers
